Police Family Violence Fact Sheet

General Material
Published Date

The fact sheet outlines issues particular to the experiences of those abused by a family member who is a police officer. These include: fear that police will side with the abusive colleague; lack of police department policies for dealing with officer-involved domestic violence; police agencies that handle the case internally and don't send the case to prosecution; barriers to getting a police officer convicted; and if convicted, officers petitioning and winning expungements.

The fact sheet also mentions the impact on police officers of 1996 US federal legislation, the "Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban" (commonly known as the Lautenberg Amendment) that prohibits individuals from owning or using firearms if convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence offenses.
