For many of us, technology plays an integral role in our day-to-day lives. We connect with friends and family on social media, access news and current events from online media sources, and use smart phones' GPS capabilities to figure out how to travel to new places. While rapid advancements in technology provide us with powerful tools to connect, learn, and exchange ideas, they also arm abusers with new ways to inflict harm.

This newly updated special collection explores ways to promote safe internet use, build healthy online communities, and promote social justice online, while addressing some of the ways that abusers misuse technology to commit gender-based violence. The collection features resources that highlight the importance of privacy and promote safe online interactions, paying particular attention to working with children and youth to foster safe online spaces. It also includes resources for survivors who have experienced or are currently experiencing digital abuse, and provides helpful information for service providers.

Technology is ever evolving, at a rate that sometimes feels impossible to grasp. There will always be a “next big thing” which will undoubtedly raise questions about the safety of survivors of abuse. It is our role to ask those questions, to support informed, survivor-centered choices around the use of technology, and to continue to advocate for the rights and needs of those experiencing abuse.

This collection was developed by the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence. Special thanks to the SafetyNet Project of the National Network to End Domestic Violence for their leadership and resource development in this area.

Human trafficking is defined by the United Nations as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of:

Threats or use of force or other forms of coercion;
Abduction;
Fraud or deception;
Abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability; and
Giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person or having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation (Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, 2003).

Human trafficking occurs both in the United States (U.S.) and abroad, and can have devastating effects on its victims.

Victims of human trafficking in the U.S. include both U.S. citizens and residents trafficked within its borders, as well as foreign nationals trafficked into the country from abroad. International traffickers consider the U.S. a major destination for victims of both sexual and labor exploitation. Traffickers use “push-pull” factors to take advantage of their intended targets (Chang, 2006; Dabby & Liou, 2014). Some examples of “push-pull” factors include:

Lack/limited employment & educational opportunities	Availability of employment & educational opportunities
Disasters, both natural and man-made	Improved quality of life

Given these complex realities and experiences, victims of trafficking may need a range of supports and services.

The NRCDV recognizes that there are different philosophies, approaches, and debates surrounding human trafficking. Readers are encouraged to examine resources with a critical eye and an appreciation of the depth and breadth of the issues and perspectives on human trafficking.

This special collection is intended to help those interested in learning more about human trafficking and intersecting issues gain a working knowledge of the complexities of human trafficking, as well as applicable laws and policies in the U.S. and internationally. It is also intended to provide resources and tools for practitioners and professionals working at the intersections of human trafficking, domestic violence and sexual violence.

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is defined as a specific type of damage to the brain that is caused by external physical force and is not present at birth or degenerative. A blow (or blows) to the head, shaking of the brain, loss of oxygen (anoxia), colliding with a stationary object and exposure to blasts can cause a TBI. Based on this definition, the use of physical force by an intimate partner during incidents of domestic violence can cause traumatic brain injury as abusive partners often cause injury to a victim’s head, neck (including strangulation), and face. In one study, 30% of domestic violence survivors reported a loss of consciousness at least once and 67% reported residual problems that were potentially head-injury related (Corrigan, Wolfe, Mysiw, Jackson & Bogner, 2003).

However, TBI often goes undiagnosed amongst domestic violence survivors. One reason for this is that domestic violence survivors, who also have a TBI, may exhibit symptoms that could resemble those of a mental illness, such as depression, anxiety, tension and/or inability to adapt to changing situations. Additionally, DV/TBI survivors may appear to have behavioral issues, including problems with keeping appointments, following through, or completing tasks that require multiple steps.

Anecdotal information from survivors and advocates indicates that victims with TBI are often questioned in regards to their ability to parent. At a training for domestic violence advocates, a TBI survivor as a result of domestic violence shared how she would forget to pick up her daughter from school, which prompted a call to the Child Protective Services agency in her area. Others have talked about the difficulties they experienced while living in congregate settings where following rules was, at times, problematic. These kinds of behaviors are often not intentional and survivors may even appear to be uncooperative and oppositional. However, it is important to keep in mind that many of these perceived behaviors might be directly related to the TBI. Therefore, it is crucial for domestic violence service providers and health care professionals to understand the prevalence and effects of TBI within the context of domestic violence.

This Special Collection offers information about the intersection between domestic violence and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). It provides advocates and other professionals with tools to screen for TBI within the context of domestic violence as well as presentations, articles, and other relevant resources on the topic.

The purpose of this collection is to: 1) increase knowledge and understanding of TBI within the context of domestic violence, 2) provide tools to advocates and other professionals to screen domestic violence survivors for TBI, and 3) highlight best practices.

The NRCDV provides a wide range of free, comprehensive, and individualized technical assistance, training, and specialized resource materials and projects designed to enhance current intervention and prevention strategies. The purpose of this collection is to:

Provide information on issues and concepts specific to sexual violence against military service members;
Define the term Military Sexual Trauma;
Inform on current policy, procedures, legislation, and litigation that may impact members of the military, veterans, and advocates;
Offer resources for service members, veterans, advocates, educators, and prevention practitioners; and
Share additional resources and organizations serving as partners, collaborators, advocates, or allies for service members and veterans impacted by sexual violence.

This collection is a companion piece to The Intersection of Domestic Violence and the Military: Working Across Disciplines published by the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence in June 2011. In an effort to focus on the topic of Military Sexual Trauma as a co-occurring issue, the resources listed here provide a detailed look at the issue of sexual violence in the military.

While information and resources shared here should provide pertinent and reliable information on the topic, this is by no means a complete collection of all resources available. These resources were compiled by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center to add to the body of knowledge for people affected by and working to end sexual violence.

This Special Collection provides lessons learned and related resources from nine HHS-funded 3-year demonstration projects to enhance services to children and youth who have been exposed to domestic violence.

The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV) and the University of Connecticut School of Social Work reports data that documents how well local domestic violence programs are addressing the needs of those reaching out to them for assistance. This substantial data collection effort involved 90 urban, rural and suburban community-based domestic violence programs and nearly 1,500 domestic violence survivors surveyed in 2010 about their experiences seeking and receiving non-residential domestic violence services.

This study complements the Meeting Survivors' Needs: A Multi-State Study of Domestic Violence Shelter Experiences (2008), a survey of survivors of domestic violence who were in shelter. The Shelter Study was also conducted by the University of Connecticut of Social Work, in collaboration with the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence.

This collection complies information and resources from both studies, documenting our movement work to provide both residential and non-residential services to survivors of domestic violence and their loved ones.

This guide is for victim advocates working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals who may be experiencing stalking. Other service providers, individuals experiencing stalking, and friends/family of people experiencing stalking may also find it useful in supporting victims of stalking. It provides basic information about the dynamics of stalking and safety planning, co-occurring crimes, specific tactics used against LGBTQ+ individuals, safety planning strategies that support LGBTQ+ stalking victims, and issues to be aware of when supporting LGBTQ+ victims.

For many domestic violence organizations, the pandemic has led to shifting how advocacy supports are delivered. That is, many supports are now being offered virtually to accommodate the pandemic quarantine and in-person restrictions. Support group, a cornerstone of domestic violence advocacy, has historically been one way to cultivate social connectedness for survivors. With the move to virtual platforms, we know that effective facilitation is critical to engagement, peer support, and even healing in a support group space. The same principles can be applied to listening sessions, focus groups and other groups across our organizations. In this follow-up to Transformative Facilitation: Building Virtual Communities, presenters discuss lessons learned in the shift to virtual facilitation and explore ways to navigate challenges that emerge.

This Toolkit organizes information, resources, tips and tools drawn from the wealth of information gathered when the two service systems were convened through local collaborative projects funded by the Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
