FVPSA Tribal Grantees take on the responsibility of being direct service providers within communities experiencing a crisis of violence. This presentation proposes examining a tool available to address aspects of that violence – the Indian Child Welfare Act. It will examine ICWA’s background, the statistical over-representation of Native American children in state systems, and the intersection of child welfare and domestic violence. With the lens of trauma-informed and responsive systems, the presentation will look at best and promising practices for state-tribe collaboration and for Tribal courts considering requests to accept transfer cases from state court.
