The Story of Sameera: The complex relationship between abused immigrant women and the community and systems that are meant to help them

Event Date
Thursday, February 27, 2020, 03:00PM

Join Praxis International for a national screening of The Story of Sameera, followed by a discussion of advocacy strategies in the face of anti-immigrant bias.

The Story of Sameera is a compelling 8-minute video that dramatizes the experiences of an abused immigrant woman when she unwillingly becomes involved with systems designed to help her. The video features Sameera, a recent immigrant to the U.S. who is not yet fluent in English. When a neighbor calls 911 after her husband abuses her, Sameera faces incredible challenges navigating multiple systems while balancing the powerful influences of family and community.

This video can be used by advocacy programs, coalitions, community groups and public institutions to demonstrate the extreme difficulties that immigrant women face when they experience battering. The Story of Sameera is a powerful educational tool that encourages rethinking how to create safety for women and their children. This new tool is needed today, more than ever.

The Story of Sameera raises awareness by challenging the current dangerous climate that fosters fear and vulnerability among many immigrant survivors. This video is an invaluable tool to promote action to keep immigrant women and children safe.
