Welcome to our Holiday Toolbox! NRCDV has released information to the field, including Technical Assistance (TA) Guidance documents, as part of our Domestic Violence and the Holidays Series in preparation for the time period beginning the week of Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day (“the holidays”). These were developed to 1) respond to the common misperception that domestic violence increases during the holidays, and 2) provide support during a time that may be stressful for survivors of domestic violence and the programs that serve them.

Available research linking reports of domestic violence to the holiday season is limited and inconclusive. In fact, data available from the National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH) shows a decline in the number of calls received during the holidays, including on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day (see Effect of the Holidays on Calls to the National Domestic Violence Hotline). Whether or not domestic violence programs experience shifts in the number of survivors accessing services during the holidays, there are unique opportunities and challenges to consider as victim advocates provide services to survivors and their families during this time.

The resources included in this Toolbox highlight trauma-informed strategies to support programs in promoting healing, wellness and safety during the holiday season, while taking into consideration the diverse needs of survivors and the advocates that serve them. Each TA Guidance document provides best practice information and resources related to: positive visioning, promoting wellness and managing stress, cultural sensitivity, responding to the food-related needs of survivors in shelter, considerations for working with survivors from specific populations, and understanding the available research.

The Toolbox features holiday call data from the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and a social media section offering messaging to engage audiences around supporting survivors during the holidays via Twitter, Facebook and other channels.

These tools are offered to inspire and support community-based programs in their efforts to develop innovative, trauma-informed, culturally inclusive practices that are responsive to the unique needs of both survivors and advocates.

The American Journal of Preventive Medicine has released new research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the lifetime economic burden of intimate partner violence among adults in the United States. Following CDC’s “Lifetime Economic Burden of Rape Among U.S. Adults,” this new study takes into account medical costs, lost productivity, criminal justice activities, and other costs such as victim property loss or damage. Understanding the costs of violence can help build the case for prevention. On this webinar, presenters from PreventConnect, the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV), and CDC explored the long-term economic cost of intimate partner violence and implications for prevention policy and practice.

Pregnant women’s experiences and needs for emotional support, physical well-being, access to healthcare and other community-based services are significantly different from women who are not pregnant. For pregnant women also dealing with past or current domestic violence and currently residing in a domestic violence shelter or safe house, the multitude of experiences and needs may be even greater.

This webinar provides information on the impact of trauma in pregnancy and childbirth and outlines how a partnership between advocates and birth workers in the community may be of benefit to pregnant survivors of domestic or sexual violence. Together, victim advocacy and doula skills can set in motion a new beginning for healthier relationships between survivors of abuse and their newborns.

Featured Speakers:

Kenya Fairley, MSEd., (CD)DONA is a practicing doula with experience, knowledge and education related to childbirth and supporting pregnant survivors of abuse. Building on over 15 years of experience as a strong, compassionate advocate for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, Kenya brings an empowering, feminist perspective to her doula practice. She believes in thoughtful planning, education and relationship building to ensure a positive and satisfying birth experience for every family she serves.
Fern Gilkerson joined the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV) in 2010 with an attention to intersections between health and domestic violence. Before coming to PCADV, Fern was on staff at Domestic Violence Services of Lancaster County. Fern has a graduate degree from Antioch University in Women¹s Studies with a focus on multicultural feminist teaching methodologies and has worked as a professional birth assistant. She serves as part of the PCADV Prevention Team and PCADV’s Project Connect 2.0, which focused on adolescent reproductive health, abuse and coercion.

This Guide showcases the nine demonstration projects funded by the FVPSA Program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through Stamp Out Family Violence Act of 2001, focusing on their goals, collaborative partnerships, experiences, challenges, and successes. These Demonstration of Enhanced Services to Children and Youth Exposed to Domestic Violence sites expanded the fieldÕs understanding of the varied ways in which children, youth and families experiencing domestic violence can be identified and provided essential services and supports.
