For many of us, technology plays an integral role in our day-to-day lives. We connect with friends and family on social media, access news and current events from online media sources, and use smart phones' GPS capabilities to figure out how to travel to new places. While rapid advancements in technology provide us with powerful tools to connect, learn, and exchange ideas, they also arm abusers with new ways to inflict harm.

This newly updated special collection explores ways to promote safe internet use, build healthy online communities, and promote social justice online, while addressing some of the ways that abusers misuse technology to commit gender-based violence. The collection features resources that highlight the importance of privacy and promote safe online interactions, paying particular attention to working with children and youth to foster safe online spaces. It also includes resources for survivors who have experienced or are currently experiencing digital abuse, and provides helpful information for service providers.

Technology is ever evolving, at a rate that sometimes feels impossible to grasp. There will always be a “next big thing” which will undoubtedly raise questions about the safety of survivors of abuse. It is our role to ask those questions, to support informed, survivor-centered choices around the use of technology, and to continue to advocate for the rights and needs of those experiencing abuse.

This collection was developed by the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence. Special thanks to the SafetyNet Project of the National Network to End Domestic Violence for their leadership and resource development in this area.

This Special Collection offers resources that promote strategies for creating environments where children can thrive with particular focus on enhancing capacity for resilience across the lifespan. While this collection emphasizes primary prevention strategies that foster healthy attitudes and behaviors, it also reflects our understanding of trauma as a common human experience, and explores post-traumatic growth as a positive framework for understanding trauma within the context of child development. Central to this collection is the belief that advocates working to end gender based violence are committed to the safety and well being of all children, and wish to create social change by investing in the potential that children offer – the promise of a new generation of non-violent, respectful young people and adults who resist traditional social norms that perpetuate violence against women and girls.

The resources in this collection are organized by intended audience and address all levels of the social ecological model. Here you’ll find materials for use by young people, parents and caregivers, teachers and school-based professionals, helping professionals, gender-based violence intervention and prevention advocates, and communities and organizations. Links to related Special Collections are also provided.

This collection was developed as a product of the Adult Children Exposed to Domestic Violence (ACE-DV) Leadership Forum, a project of the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence established to amplify the voices and experiences of ACE-DV to enhance our movement to end gender based violence. Special thanks to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, the Vermont Network Against Domestic Violence, and the University of Minnesota School of Social Work for supporting the development of this resource.

The most tragic consequence of domestic violence is undoubtedly the death of one or both intimate partners, and in some cases, their children or family and friends of the victim. Intimate partner homicide is the final assertion of power and control in an abusive relationship and, paradoxically, an acknowledgment of the abuser’s loss of control (Websdale, 1999).

Although intimate partner homicide has declined over the past decades (especially among male victims), the available research shows that women are more likely to be killed by an intimate partner (husband, boyfriend, same-sex partner, or ex) than by anyone else (Catalano, 2013). Female murder victims are almost 6 times more likely than male murder victims to be killed by an intimate partner (Cooper & Smith, 2011). This collection offers resources to support the expansion of services and systems’ responses that are critically important to the prevention and continued decline of intimate partner homicides.

Much is known about the risk factors that increase the danger that victim will be killed by her intimate partner. The predominant risk factor for intimate partner homicide is prior physical abuse, particularly physical assaults that have recently escalated in frequency and severity (Block, 2003). Other risk factors identified in the research include stalking, estrangement (physical leaving, legal separation, etc.); strangulation (choking) during an assault; threats to kill; prior use of or access to weapons, especially firearms; forced sex; controlling, possessive, jealous behavior; drug and/or alcohol abuse; and, to lesser degrees, the presence in the household of children who are not the batterer’s biological offspring; and unemployment of the batterer (Roehl, O’Sullivan, Webster, & Campbell, 2005 & Campbell et al., 2003a).

Sadly, leaving an abusive relationship doesn’t necessarily end the violence, and therefore leaving isn’t always the safest choice for victims. In fact, “the extant research literature shows that women experience an increased risk of lethal violence when they leave intimate relationships with men” (Websdale, 1999). It is essential that helping professionals become familiar with lethality risk factors so that they can best minimize these risks and support the informed choices of domestic violence survivors.

This collection provides:

national and statewide homicide statistics that help illustrate the scope of the problem;
an overview of tools and strategies for assessing danger or the risk of lethality in domestic violence cases;
recommendations and approaches for utilizing the fatality review process to prevent intimate partner homicide;
materials describing various systems’ responses to domestic violence and efforts to prevent homicide;
resources to assist advocates in helping to frame the issue through media response and community mobilization; and
resources addressing the grief and trauma experienced by loved ones of those whose lives are lost to domestic violence.

The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, in collaboration with partners from across the Pacific Coast region of the United States, held our third virtual Prevention Town Hall on September 14 and 15, 2022. This event was an opportunity to dig deeply into the theme “Prevention is Radical” across 2 days.

This event uplifted innovative prevention approaches in the Pacific Coast region of the United States that are community-driven, rooted in cultural strengths, and focused on relationship building. Together, participants explored how our work is connected to and impacted by our current social and political reality, and what part each of us plays actualizing collective liberation.

Este evento fué una oportunidad para profundizar en el tema La Prevención es Radical por 2 días.

Este evento promovió enfoques de prevención innovadores en la región de la costa del Pacífico de los Estados Unidos centrados en la comunidad, enfocados las fortalezas culturales y en la construcción de relaciones. Juntos, los participantes exploraron cómo nuestro trabajo está conectado e impactado por nuestra realidad social y política actual, y el papel que cada person juega en la actualización de la liberación colectiva.

The Adult Children Exposed to Domestic Violence (ACE-DV) Leadership Forum, a project of the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, is shifting the paradigm from deficit to growth – supporting the development of trauma-informed, culturally responsive, asset-based policies and practices that enhance resilience capacity in those who experience childhood trauma.

This training explores how domestic violence shapes children’s lives and impacts parenting, with an emphasis on the assets and strengths of families who survive this experience together. Participants will have an opportunity to learn through a combination of personal storytelling and a review of emerging research to gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the complex choices survivors face and ways families can be best supported across various systems.

The presenters will review the impact of domestic violence on the lives of children, including its intersections with other forms of trauma and oppression, with a specific focus on the experiences of Black children in systems designed to help. Presenters will offer strategies and tools for those in the community who wish to increase their capacity to provide growth-based, survivor-centered services and support to families experiencing trauma.

For many, the COVID-19 pandemic has been an eye-opening and life-changing experience. It has also changed the way we work and live in society. It has magnified systemic racial and gender inequities, urging us to do our movement work in bold and innovative ways. We, as advocates and activists dedicated to ending gender-based violence, must work together for health equity and racial justice. It is clearer than ever that this is key to fostering healthy and thriving communities.

This paper makes connections between health equity and our work to prevent sexual and intimate partner violence. It centers the stories of survivors at the intersections of systemic racism, violence, and oppression. It explores ways to build both individual and organizational capacity to address health inequity. And, it offers a call to action for those ready to commit to health equity in their gender-based violence prevention work.

“We spend our lives traveling through trauma. Our community, our home, needs to be a place that makes us feel whole.” – Rev. Dr. Aleese Moore-Orbih

Trauma is a common human experience. Our experiences of trauma help to shape who we are. Both individually and collectively, over our own lifespans and those of our ancestors. These experiences challenge us with pain and hardship, but also offer opportunities for growth. These experiences impact the way in which we see the world, and inform our choices going forward. Most recently, we have seen how living through the COVID-19 pandemic has changed us. Yes, there has been fear, loss, and grief. But this collective trauma has revealed new strengths, and new opportunities to refocus, reprioritize and reset.

Together, we are learning the importance of community care in building the future we want to live into. We see that we must shift to a more expansive healing-centered approach for responding to trauma and oppression. This holistic framework draws upon cultural, spirituality, civic engagement, and collective healing. We see the importance of community connectedness in fostering wellbeing and resilience. We embrace the call for collective liberation – acknowledging that nobody will be free until all of us are. Getting there requires dismantling anti-Blackness. It means actively centering, celebrating, and following the leadership of Black women.

Community care that centers Black women advances equitable and resilient communities for all. Resilient communities are those in which everyone is both connected and invested. This includes individuals, families, groups, organizations, and institutions. They gain a sense of belonging, purpose, and mattering from both deriving value from and adding value to their community. This reciprocal relationship creates communities that allow us to thrive. Contributors bring everything that they are, including hurt and pain, strength and beauty.

This Technical Assistance (TA) Bundle includes TA and training resources from NRCDV to support those who wish to invest in healing-centered community care. This approach nurtures resilient and equitable communities where those most marginalized can thrive. It fosters collective healing and liberation.
