However, no research has been done on rates of such violence among American Indian and Alaska Native women living in urban areas despite the fact that approximately 71% of American Indian and Alaska Natives live in urban areas.</p> <p>To fill this gap, in 2017, Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI), a tribal epidemiology center, began a study aimed at assessing the number and dynamics of cases of missing and murdered American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls in cities across the United States. This study sought to assess why obtaining data on this violence is so difficult, how law enforcement agencies are tracking and responding to these cases, and how media is reporting on them. The study’s intention is to provide a comprehensive snapshot of the MMIWG crisis in urban American Indian and Alaska Native communities and the institutional practices that allow them to disappear not once, but three times—in life, in the media, and in the data.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-links field--type-link field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Associated Links</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="http://www.uihi.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Missing-and-Murdered-Indigenous-Women-and-Girls-Report.pdf" target="_blank">Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women &amp; Girls: A Snapshot of Data from 71 Urban…</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-material-categories field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Material Categories</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/criminal-justice" hreflang="und">Criminal Justice</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/communities-color" hreflang="und">Communities of Color</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/domestic-violence" hreflang="und">Domestic Violence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/homicide-lethality" hreflang="und">Homicide / Lethality</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/sexual-violence" hreflang="und">Sexual Violence</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 16 Nov 2018 16:13:50 +0000 berdman 10557 at https://vawnet.org Our Bodies, Our Stories: Sexual Violence Among Native Women in Seattle, WA https://vawnet.org/material/our-bodies-our-stories-sexual-violence-among-native-women-seattle-wa <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Our Bodies, Our Stories: Sexual Violence Among Native Women in Seattle, WA</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/berdman" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">berdman</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Fri, 11/16/2018 - 11:49</span> <div class="field field--name-field-material-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item">General Material</div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=10559&amp;2=bookmark" token="BpnZ6RBNUQigmIYmADcpTbNhKJJwh9ZJXnUArKWArMs"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="field field--name-field-published-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Published Date</div> <div class="field__item">August, 2018</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-publisher field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Publisher(s)</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/publisher/urban-indian-health-institute-uihi" hreflang="en">Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI)</a></div> </div> </div> <span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_20 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="https://vawnet.org/material/our-bodies-our-stories-sexual-violence-among-native-women-seattle-wa" data-a2a-title="Our Bodies, Our Stories: Sexual Violence Among Native Women in Seattle, WA"><a class="a2a_button_facebook"></a><a class="a2a_button_twitter"></a><a class="a2a_button_linkedin"></a><a class="a2a_dd addtoany_share" href="https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Fvawnet.org%2Fmaterial%2Four-bodies-our-stories-sexual-violence-among-native-women-seattle-wa&amp;title=Our%20Bodies%2C%20Our%20Stories%3A%20Sexual%20Violence%20Among%20Native%20Women%20in%20Seattle%2C%20WA"></a></span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>In 2010, Urban Indian Health Institute partnered with the Division of Violence Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to administer a comprehensive sexual violence survey to better understand the experiences of urban Native women in Seattle, Washington. King County, where Seattle is located, has a large urban Indian population of approximately 44,500 people.</p> <p>This survey attempted to gather a well-rounded understanding of multiple forms of sexual violence perpetrated against this population, including whether a woman was raped or coerced into sex. In this initial release of the data, a valuable snapshot is exposed for communities and health care providers serving urban Native women.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-links field--type-link field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Associated Links</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="http://www.uihi.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/UIHI_sexual-violence_r601_pagesFINAL.pdf" target="_blank">Our Bodies, Our Stories: Sexual Violence Among Native Women in Seattle, WA</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-material-categories field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Material Categories</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/communities-color" hreflang="und">Communities of Color</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/sexual-violence" hreflang="und">Sexual Violence</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 16 Nov 2018 16:49:33 +0000 berdman 10559 at https://vawnet.org Reproductive Health of Urban American Indian and Alaska Native Women: Examining Unintended Pregnancy, Contraception, Sexual History and Behavior, and Non-Voluntary Sexual Intercourse https://vawnet.org/material/reproductive-health-urban-american-indian-and-alaska-native-women-examining-unintended <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Reproductive Health of Urban American Indian and Alaska Native Women: Examining Unintended Pregnancy, Contraception, Sexual History and Behavior, and Non-Voluntary Sexual Intercourse</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Tue, 09/16/2014 -
