TBI can be caused by a number of principal mechanisms, including motor-vehicle crashes, falls, and assaults, and can have serious short-term and long-term consequences. This report from the CDC describes the estimated incidence of TBI-related emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalizations, and deaths during 2013 and makes comparisons to similar estimates from 2007.

This resport describes the prevalence and context of intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization using data from the 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS). Findings discuss IPV victimization, frequency, severity, patterns, need for services, and impacts to more fully convey this public health burden.

The report shows younger adults, racial/ethnic minorities, those with lower incomes, and those who have had recent food or housing insecurity experience higher rates of IPV. While many men experience IPV, women are disproportionately affected.

Primary prevention of IPV must begin at an early age before unhealthy relationship patterns are established and focus on those at greatest risk.

Specific findings include:

Black non-Hispanic women (43.7%) and multiracial non-Hispanic women (53.8%) had a significantly higher lifetime prevalence of rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner compared to other racial/ethnic minorities.
IPV victimization begins early with nearly 70% of female victims and nearly 54% of male victims having experienced IPV prior to age 25.

This report presents information based on respondents’ self-reported sexual orientation and their lifetime victimization experiences of sexual violence, stalking, and violence by an intimate partner. The findings in this report are for 2010, the first year of NISVS data collection, and are based on complete interviews. Complete interviews were obtained from 16,507 adults (9,086 women and 7,421 men).

Key findings:

Lesbians and gay men reported levels of violence victimization equal to or higher than those of heterosexuals. Violence affects everyone regardless of sexual orientation.
Bisexual women had significantly higher lifetime prevalence of rape and sexual violence other than rape by any perpetrator (which includes an intimate partner, acquaintance, family member, stranger, or person of authority), when compared to both lesbian and heterosexual women.
Bisexual women had significantly higher lifetime prevalence of rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner when compared to both lesbian and heterosexual women.
The vast majority of bisexual women who experienced rape reported having only male perpetrators.

NISVS is an ongoing, nationally representative random digit dial telephone survey that collects information about experiences of sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence among non-institutionalized English and/or Spanish-speaking women and men aged 18 or older in the United States. NISVS provides detailed information on the magnitude and characteristics of these forms of violence for the nation and for individual states.

The findings presented in this report are for 2010, the first year of data collection, and are based on complete interviews obtained from 16,507 adults (9,086 women and 7,421 men).

Overall, lifetime and one year estimates for sexual violence, stalking and intimate partner violence were alarmingly high for adult Americans; with IPV alone affecting more than 12 million people each year. Women are disproportionately impacted. They experienced high rates of severe intimate partner violence, rape and stalking, and long-term chronic disease and other health impacts such as PTSD symptoms. NISVS also shows that most rape and IPV is first experienced before age 24, highlighting the importance of preventing this violence before it occurs to ensure that all people can live life to their fullest potential.
