The goal is to facilitate learning about different polices, programs, and approaches that have been developed, adopted, and adapted internationally to address VAW in diverse cultural and socio-economic situations. The review of documents included in this special collection suggests the following: First, there are limited multi-country studies on VAW. Second, human rights declarations and conventions set international legal standards for policy and program responses to VAW. Third, international initiatives have focused on VAW prevention by addressing gender inequalities in several development sectors, particularly justice, health, and education. Fourth, many approaches to prevent and intervene in VAW use social-ecological framework and engage community members, including men. Fifth, little is known about programs that have proven effective in ending VAW across countries because there is limited rigorous evaluation of programs that address VAW.</p> <p>The special collection is organized into six sections, and the documents included cover multi-country projects, policies, and studies. Important to note here is that this special collection is not a comprehensive listing of all documents available; rather, it includes selected documents that are available online free of charge. Studies on VAW in the U.S. are not included in this special collection, but can be found elsewhere on VAWnet.</p> <p>This collection was developed by Sheetal Rana of the <a href="http://www.mincava.umn.edu/" target="_blank">Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse</a>.</p> </div> Fri, 12 Aug 2016 19:47:19 +0000 ckeene 8184 at https://vawnet.org Closing the Revolving Door: Building Freedom and Justice for Trafficking Survivors https://vawnet.org/material/closing-revolving-door-building-freedom-and-justice-trafficking-survivors <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Closing the Revolving Door: Building Freedom and Justice for Trafficking Survivors</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/109" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">pbranco</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Tue, 03/10/2026 - 09:01</span> <div class="field field--name-field-material-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item">General Material</div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=13738&amp;2=bookmark" token="JTmRj4HGh0-859W1Bng35Y2obk_apvNIcEUH0O9iVCQ"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="field field--name-field-published-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Published Date</div> <div class="field__item">February, 2026</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-publisher field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Publisher(s)</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/3411" hreflang="en">National Center for Victims of Crime</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/publisher/safety-and-justice-challenge" hreflang="en">Safety and Justice Challenge</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Author(s)</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author/kim-camacho" hreflang="en">Kim Camacho</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author/dashiell-coleman" hreflang="en">Dashiell Coleman</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author/katy-maskolunas" hreflang="en">Katy Maskolunas</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author/elizabeth-jimenez" hreflang="en">Elizabeth Jimenez</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author/tanisha-murden" hreflang="en">Tanisha Murden</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author/elizabeth-quiroz" hreflang="en">Elizabeth Quiroz</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author/kathryn-walsh" hreflang="en">Kathryn Walsh</a></div> </div> </div> <span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_20 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="https://vawnet.org/material/closing-revolving-door-building-freedom-and-justice-trafficking-survivors" data-a2a-title="Closing the Revolving Door: Building Freedom and Justice for Trafficking Survivors"><a class="a2a_button_facebook"></a><a class="a2a_button_twitter"></a><a class="a2a_button_linkedin"></a><a class="a2a_dd addtoany_share" href="https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Fvawnet.org%2Fmaterial%2Fclosing-revolving-door-building-freedom-and-justice-trafficking-survivors&amp;title=Closing%20the%20Revolving%20Door%3A%20Building%20Freedom%20and%20Justice%20for%20Trafficking%20Survivors"></a></span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>This report delves into the overlooked intersection of human trafficking and incarceration and offers some suggestions about how to better keep trafficking survivors out of jail, support them if they’re incarcerated, and help them afterward. Four survivors of trafficking co-authored this report with staff from the National Center for Victims of Crime (NCVC).</p> <p>In 2025, the National Center for Victims of Crime assembled a group of individuals with personal experience in human trafficking and incarceration. One key takeaway from this group was the importance of recognizing and identifying signs of trafficking among justice system professionals. This understanding is crucial for improving responses to crimes that occur within the context of trafficking.</p> <p>Additionally, the group highlighted the necessity of eliminating common barriers faced during the process of reentry into the community. They emphasized the value of implementing trauma-informed approaches at every point of contact within the system.</p> <p>With the insights from this group of experts, NCVC has identified several practical strategies that can be applied before, during, and after incarceration. "By basing our approaches and solutions on the firsthand experiences of those who confront the challenges and barriers to accessing services, we can create more effective pathways for these individuals to thrive." This prevention resource brings together examples based on the best available evidence. It outlines seven strategies to prevent community violence to ensure everyone can live in safe, healthy, and thriving communities.</p> <p>The strategies and approaches described in this prevention resource are supported by the best available evidence and can be a critical tool for communities in their violence prevention efforts.</p> <p>The prevention strategies are:</p> <ul> <li>Strengthen economic security.</li> <li>Provide quality education.</li> <li>Create protective environments.</li> <li>Promote healthy family relationships.</li> <li>Strengthen youth and young adults’ skills.</li> <li>Connect young people to caring adults and activities.</li> <li>Intervene to lessen harms and prevent future risk.</li> </ul> <p>This resource is an update to the Youth Violence Prevention Resource for Action released in 2016. It includes updated evidence for preventing violence in youth (ages 10-24) and adds examples for preventing violence in young adults (ages 25-34).</p> <p>Community violence is a serious public health problem in the United States. For youth ages 10 to 24 years, homicide is the second leading cause of death, and for young adults ages 25 to 34, it is the third leading cause of death. Additionally, approximately 800,000 young people are treated in U.S. emergency departments each year for injuries resulting from interpersonal violence. This resource also describes the social and structural contexts for community violence that these strategies might help address. Throughout the document, we focus on improving the conditions that increase risk for violence. Communities can prioritize a comprehensive approach that addresses the underlying drivers of violence while also reducing the immediate risks.</p> <p>Many communities are implementing effective strategies for prevention. The strategies and approaches in this prevention resource are intended to be combined with existing community-led prevention approaches. Everyone can play a role in putting the evidence into action as we work together towards communities free from violence.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-links field--type-link field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Associated Links</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/violence-prevention/media/pdf/resources-for-action/CV-Prevention-Resource-for-Action_508.pdf?ACSTrackingID=USCDC_1104-DM125981&amp;ACSTrackingLabel=CDC%20releases%20the%20new%20Community%20Violence%20Prevention%20Resource%20for%20Action%20&amp;deliveryName=USCDC_1104-DM125981" target="_blank">Community Violence Prevention Resource for Action</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/violence-prevention/media/pdf/resources-for-action/CV-RFA-Exec-Summary_508.pdf?ACSTrackingID=USCDC_1104-DM125981&amp;ACSTrackingLabel=CDC%20releases%20the%20new%20Community%20Violence%20Prevention%20Resource%20for%20Action%20&amp;deliveryName=USCDC_1104-DM125981" target="_blank">1-pager</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/community-violence/about/index.html?ACSTrackingID=USCDC_1104-DM125981&amp;ACSTrackingLabel=CDC%20releases%20the%20new%20Community%20Violence%20Prevention%20Resource%20for%20Action%20&amp;deliveryName=USCDC_1104-DM125981" target="_blank">About Community Violence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/youth-violence/about/index.html?ACSTrackingID=USCDC_1104-DM125981&amp;ACSTrackingLabel=CDC%20releases%20the%20new%20Community%20Violence%20Prevention%20Resource%20for%20Action%20&amp;deliveryName=USCDC_1104-DM125981" target="_blank">About Youth Violence</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-material-categories field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Material Categories</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/collaboration-bridge-building" hreflang="und">Collaboration / Bridge Building</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/community-organizing-mobilization-engagement" hreflang="und">Community Organizing / Mobilization / Engagement</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/coordinated-community-response" hreflang="und">Coordinated Community Response</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/movement-building" hreflang="und">Movement Building</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/core-competencies" hreflang="und">Core Competencies</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/prevention-programming" hreflang="und">Prevention Programming</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/child-welfare" hreflang="und">Child Welfare</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/economic-justice" hreflang="und">Economic Justice</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/lgbtq-rights" hreflang="und">LGBTQ Rights</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/health-public-health" hreflang="und">Health / Public Health</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/human-trafficking" hreflang="und">Human Trafficking</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/young-people" hreflang="und">Young People</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 16 Aug 2024 12:42:40 +0000 ckeene 13221 at https://vawnet.org Human Trafficking Prevention Month Toolkit https://vawnet.org/material/human-trafficking-prevention-month-toolkit <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Human Trafficking Prevention Month Toolkit</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/berdman" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">berdman</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Wed, 01/11/2023 - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ theme for Human Trafficking Prevention Month 2023 is <em>Partner to Prevent</em>. This is an opportunity to highlight the power of partnerships and collaboration in strengthening anti-trafficking efforts. Preventing human trafficking cannot be accomplished alone; rather, we must build partnerships across all sectors of society to improve the lives of those we serve. When we #Partner2Prevent, we can enhance our efforts to keep everyone safe from human trafficking.</p> <p>This campaign aims to educate, empower, and provide resources to social service providers, healthcare and behavioral healthcare providers, school-based professionals, and other allied professionals to increase awareness and foster partnerships. This toolkit breaks the month down into focus weeks to ensure clear messaging and resource sharing. Sample social media posts, sample email and newsletter content, and resources that we encourage you to share throughout the month of January are also included.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-links field--type-link field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Associated Links</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://www.acf.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/documents/otip/OTIP%20January%20Prevention%20Month%20Toolkit%202023_Final.pdf" target="_blank">Human Trafficking Prevention Month Toolkit</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-material-categories field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Material Categories</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/coalition-building" hreflang="und">Coalition Building</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/collaboration-bridge-building" hreflang="und">Collaboration / Bridge Building</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/community-organizing-mobilization-engagement" hreflang="und">Community Organizing / Mobilization / Engagement</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/raising-awareness" hreflang="und">Raising Awareness</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/prevention-programming" hreflang="und">Prevention Programming</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/human-trafficking" hreflang="und">Human Trafficking</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/sexual-violence" hreflang="und">Sexual Violence</a></div> </div> </div> Wed, 11 Jan 2023 20:49:48 +0000 berdman 12758 at https://vawnet.org How can victim advocates and housing service providers respond to the needs of Native human trafficking survivors? https://vawnet.org/material/how-can-victim-advocates-and-housing-service-providers-respond-needs-native-human <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">How can victim advocates and housing service providers respond to the needs of Native human trafficking survivors?</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/berdman" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">berdman</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Tue, 11/08/2022 - 13:28</span> <div class="field field--name-field-material-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item">General Material</div> <div class="field__item">NRCDV Publications</div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=12711&amp;2=bookmark" token="27klNNoWjVX8PQoms4nhiNeDY59JDYO7JnJFn1Xw3I8"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="field field--name-field-published-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Published Date</div> <div class="field__item">May, 2022</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-publisher field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Publisher(s)</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/publisher/national-resource-center-domestic-violence-nrcdv" hreflang="en">National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV)</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Author(s)</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author/oyesola-oluwafunmilayo-ayeni" hreflang="en">Oyesola Oluwafunmilayo Ayeni</a></div> </div> </div> <span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_20 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="https://vawnet.org/material/how-can-victim-advocates-and-housing-service-providers-respond-needs-native-human" data-a2a-title="How can victim advocates and housing service providers respond to the needs of Native human trafficking survivors?"><a class="a2a_button_facebook"></a><a class="a2a_button_twitter"></a><a class="a2a_button_linkedin"></a><a class="a2a_dd addtoany_share" href="https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Fvawnet.org%2Fmaterial%2Fhow-can-victim-advocates-and-housing-service-providers-respond-needs-native-human&amp;title=How%20can%20victim%20advocates%20and%20housing%20service%20providers%20respond%20to%20the%20needs%20of%20Native%20human%20trafficking%20survivors%3F"></a></span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Native women have been on the receiving end of many injustices. This report describes the methodology used for the 2016/2017 data collection and the limitations of the data.</p> <p>Points of note:</p> <ul> <li>The survey instrument administered in 2016/2017 represents a change in data collection from previous years (2010–2012 and 2015). The goals for the revision were to streamline and improve the flow of the survey, decrease the level of burden on respondents, and reduce the number of data elements to improve data usability.</li> <li>Given these revisions, readers and data users are discouraged from comparing estimates from NISVS 2016/2017 to prior survey years (2010–2012 and 2015). However, you will likely notice an increase in estimates over previous years. This is because in the 2016/2017 survey, stalking behavior questions were updated to reflect the changing times – they better measure technology-based stalking (e.g., GPS for tracking, technology used for spying on others), and the NISVS team revised the fear and threat criteria for stalking victimization to be less restrictive. Because of these revisions, the survey may now more accurately capture the scope of the problem. This may be true for other violence types, as well.</li> <li>NISVS has seen a substantial decline in response and cooperation rates in recent years, like other random-digit-dial surveys. The declines are largely attributable to potential respondents not answering their phones or opting not to participate and ending the interview prior to being told about the violence-related content. Still, more than 15,000 women and more than 12,000 men did complete the NISVS survey between September 2016 and May 2017.</li> </ul> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-links field--type-link field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Associated Links</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/pdf/nisvs/NISVS-Methodology-Report__508.pdf" target="_blank">Methodology Report</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/datasources/nisvs/summaryreports.html" target="_blank">NISVS Reports &amp; Publications</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/datasources/nisvs/FAQ.html" target="_blank">NISVS Key Terms &amp; FAQs</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-material-categories field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Material Categories</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/domestic-violence" hreflang="und">Domestic Violence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/gender" hreflang="und">Gender</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/human-trafficking" hreflang="und">Human Trafficking</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/race" hreflang="und">Race</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/sexual-violence" hreflang="und">Sexual Violence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/stalking" hreflang="und">Stalking</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 04 Feb 2022 15:07:24 +0000 ckeene 12442 at https://vawnet.org Human Trafficking Prevention: Strategies for Runaway and Homeless Youth Settings https://vawnet.org/material/human-trafficking-prevention-strategies-runaway-and-homeless-youth-settings <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Human Trafficking Prevention: Strategies for Runaway and Homeless Youth Settings</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/berdman" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">berdman</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Tue, 11/17/2020 - 15:04</span> <div class="field field--name-field-material-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item">General Material</div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=11670&amp;2=bookmark" token="W_11WwbygMO0eVNnmOBDllV1RNAuAptwuijxftwWd68"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="field field--name-field-published-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Published Date</div> <div class="field__item">November, 2020</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-publisher field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Publisher(s)</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/publisher/family-and-youth-services-bureau-fysb" hreflang="en">Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB)</a></div> </div> </div> <span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_20 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="https://vawnet.org/material/human-trafficking-prevention-strategies-runaway-and-homeless-youth-settings" data-a2a-title="Human Trafficking Prevention: Strategies for Runaway and Homeless Youth Settings"><a class="a2a_button_facebook"></a><a class="a2a_button_twitter"></a><a class="a2a_button_linkedin"></a><a class="a2a_dd addtoany_share" href="https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Fvawnet.org%2Fmaterial%2Fhuman-trafficking-prevention-strategies-runaway-and-homeless-youth-settings&amp;title=Human%20Trafficking%20Prevention%3A%20Strategies%20for%20Runaway%20and%20Homeless%20Youth%20Settings"></a></span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><div style="text-align:start"> <p>This issue brief from the <a href="http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001fmOu0YquXs7yAaKX0PzuL_6YoDghOl6P1blP1fVtplHvQQZwcyQBNwQ36KTPDYzyjSUY2pf5kr9DSdq2pu-JK1awt66BNKw6pI7OI6pvDXbtJZ4f24soTzcnL16f2hpFS6cp1VhT0PT7C-auDD2ulA==&amp;c=SjSKaKUd_fPwj9qSy0HuZQlnlWPRkhA8tgyRdboNpPzOdBirEcCQ6g==&amp;ch=hwvspwvzaSgX5cezcfCUduLNWyNJlAAq8ujW0bE2y5Z_CMlPxujRjg==" target="_blank">Family Youth Services Bureau (FYSB)</a> recognizes the vital role that runaway and homeless youth (RHY) programs can play in the prevention of sex and labor trafficking among runaway and homeless youth. The Human Trafficking Leadership Academy (HTLA) Class 5 fellows worked to address the question, “How can culture be a protective factor in preventing trafficking among all Indigenous youth?”</p> <p>While one report cannot capture all of the inherently unique histories and characteristics of all Indigenous people in the United States, the HTLA Class 5 fellows hope this report and its recommendations will provide a beginning to continued change, healing, and safety for all Indigenous youth—now and for future generations.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-links field--type-link field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Associated Links</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://nhttac.acf.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/2020-11/HTLA%20Class%205%20Recommendations%20Report_508c.pdf" target="_blank">Human Trafficking Leadership Academy Class 5 Recommendations</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-material-categories field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Material Categories</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/cultural-competence" hreflang="und">Cultural Competence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/prevention-programming" hreflang="und">Prevention Programming</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/communities-color" hreflang="und">Communities of Color</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/human-trafficking" hreflang="und">Human Trafficking</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/sexual-violence" hreflang="und">Sexual Violence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/young-people" hreflang="und">Young People</a></div> </div> </div> Tue, 24 Nov 2020 13:16:18 +0000 berdman 11679 at https://vawnet.org
