The term “immigrant" refers to individuals who come to one country from another country in order to live there permanently or for an extended period of time. Immigrants are very diverse, from varied socio-cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds. They include individuals and families who have lived in the U.S. for a short period of time, as well as those who have lived in the country for many years. They have different histories and biographies, including their experiences in their country of origin, on their journey from their home country, of the immigration process, and of living in the United States. Many immigrants are U.S. citizens or possess different types of legal immigration status, and some may be undocumented. This diversity among immigrant communities also extends to their experiences of domestic violence.

While there are differences in domestic violence experienced by immigrant survivors, there may be commonalities, such as patterns of abuse tied to the survivors’ experiences as an immigrant, as well as challenges and barriers to seeking help. Similarly, domestic violence service providers may face common challenges in offering services to immigrant survivors. These challenges and barriers could be linked to a limited understanding of issues related to the survivors’ immigration status, eligibility for public assistance, different cultural practices, English language proficiency, etc. It is also essential to note the importance of using a strengths-based approach, recognizing the courage, strength, resilience, and perseverance of immigrants who have sought to establish a new life for themselves and their children in the United States. This special collection explores the complex experiences of immigrant survivors and includes resources to support their path to safety and justice. It also includes resources that help domestic violence service providers respond effectively and appropriately to immigrant survivors.

It is important to note here that several documents included in this Special Collection focus on laws and regulations related to maintaining legal immigration status, public assistance, and related matters. These laws and regulations change over time and thus some of the documents included here may be dated or may become dated. For up-to-date resources on laws and regulations, please also consult the expert organizations listed at the end of this collection. This collection will be updated with new resources as they become available, and we welcome your comments and suggestions via VAWnet’s online contact form.

This collection was originally developed in 2009 by Sheetal Rana with the Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse, updated by Patty Branco on October 2018, and complements the related collections, Immigrant Women and Sexual Violence and Human Trafficking. Casa de Esperanza and its national project, The National Latin@ Network for Healthy Families and Communities, compiled the resources for this collection which reflects many years of work at the intersections of gender-based violence and Latin@ communities. Many of the resources were developed by Casa de Esperanza while several were produced by other Latin@ organizations doing culturally specific work. Through shared experiences working at the intersections of domestic violence and Latin@ communities, many of the organizations represented here learned that effective responses to this problem require a culturally specific analysis with culturally relevant tools and approaches. Of equal importance is engaging communities to effectively respond to domestic violence. Understanding and honoring the great diversity that exists within Latin@ communities is a key component in delivering effective interventions and trauma-informed responses to address the violence. To that end, this special collection provides a compilation of tools and resources developed specifically by Latin@s and for Latin@s as well as culturally adapted materials (not simply translations) to address domestic violence in Latin@ communities. The content included within is not comprehensive, as there is much work taking place not only in the U.S. but also across Latin America. It is our intent to continue adding resources overtime and we count on readers to also provide recommended additions.

This special collection:

Introduces the framework and philosophy of Casa de Esperanza as a foundation to its trauma-informed work.
Defines relevant terms within the context of domestic violence in Latin@ communities from a social justice perspective.
Provides culturally specific resources and tools that address domestic violence within the Latin@ context related to policy, research and service provision.
Offers a list of Latin@ specific organizations addressing violence against women in the U.S.

This collection addresses some of the problems faced by immigrant women survivors of sexual violence in the United States. Additionally, this collection provides resources and tools for immigrant women and service providers who assist them, such as advocates, lawyers, and medical professionals. The annotated bibliography includes resources on many immigrant communities to highlight strategies that may be successful in stopping violence against immigrant women.

The immigrant population in the U.S. is diverse, and the barriers and challenges faced by immigrant women who experience sexual violence vary. This special collection is not comprehensive, and the documents included in this collection do not cover all immigrant communities. Rather, this collection highlights the common experiences of immigrant women who are victims of sexual violence, the legal protections and public benefits available, and practices and suggestions for increasing the effectiveness of services provided to immigrant women. This collection is also limited to documents that are freely available online.

We intend to update this special collection regularly and add new documents as they become available. We welcome your comments, suggestions, and information about documents for this special collection. Please submit your comments via VAWnet’s online contact form.

This collection was developed by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (March 2009), updated by ASISTA (October 2013), and complements the parallel collection, Immigrant Women and Domestic Violence.

This report presents a groundbreaking qualitative research project focusing on the prevention of domestic violence-related homicides among queer and trans Asians and Pacific Islanders (QTAPI). It uncovers the complex web of risk factors, including isolation and systemic oppression, which heighten the vulnerability of QTAPI survivors. Despite these challenges, the report highlights community-driven solutions that emphasize cultural values and healing, ultimately offering hope for a more supportive and inclusive future.

Much of the mainstream research on gender-based violence (GBV) overlooks or generalizes GBV in AAPI and South Asian communities. To address this gap, South Asian SOAR (SOAR) conducted nationwide listening sessions in 2021 with organizations on the frontlines of GBV work in South Asian American communities. In October 2022, the findings of these listening sessions were shared in the publication of a national report titled Together We Rise. This report presented a qualitative landscape assessment of the challenges and needs of South Asian communities experiencing gender-based violence. However, a crucial need remained for quantitative data to better understand community-based organizations and the survivors they work with, including the programs and services they offer, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on them. To address this gap, SOAR surveyed its member organizations, the only national network of South Asian GBV organizations. This report marks a significant stride towards gathering and disseminating essential data about GBV within South Asian communities.

AANHPI communities tend to be collective in nature, as well as hierarchical, to varying degrees. Both contexts complicate the concepts of consent and boundaries, especially for AANHPI youth and young adults, who often do not have opportunities to learn about the taboo topics of sex and relationships with trusted adults. This report explores how consent and boundaries are understood and practiced in AANHPI contexts, highlights how gender expectations and the need to respect certain individuals make it hard to establish boundaries, and presents recommendations for advocates and educators.

Together We Rise is the first of its kind in that it centers community-based leadership across South Asian communities in the US to expand and deepen knowledge about the gender-based violence movement.

In the summer of 2021, South Asian SOAR (SOAR), convened listening sessions with its network of 30+ frontline organizations across 13 states. These conversations elucidated the complex, nuanced, and often overlooked, challenges and needs of South Asian survivors and communities in the US. This report shares the key findings from those listening sessions, and through it, South Asian SOAR strives to ultimately generate increased funding, improve research & data collection, and drive policy changes that accurately meet South Asian survivors’ needs.

This workshop from NRCDV's 2021 Prevention Town Hall critically examines current border policies and the impact that it’s having on asylum seekers fleeing gender-based violence and immigrant victims that reside in border communities. This workshop explores the intersection between racial justice, the movement to end and prevent gender-based violence and immigration justice.

Building on the momentum from the 2020 Prevention Town Hall featuring the East North Central region of the United States, the 2021 event explored prevention strategies that center survivors who are most marginalized, uplift grassroots and community-based organizing, honor the leadership of survivors and advocates who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, and promote real transformative change that centers racial justice in our agencies.

Este taller del Congreso de Prevención 2021 del NRCDV analiza de manera crítica las políticas fronterizas existentes y el impacto que éstas tienen en les solicitantes de asilo que buscan escapar de la violencia de género y en las víctimas inmigrantes que residen en las comunidades fronterizas. En el taller se explora la intersección entre la justicia racial, el movimiento para erradicar y prevenir la violencia basada en el género y, la justicia migratoria.

Aprovechando el impulso del Congreso de Prevención del 2020 que representó a la región Centro Noreste de los Estados Unidos, el evento del 2021 exploró estrategias de prevención que centran la atención en las personas sobrevivientes más marginadas en la sociedad; destacan el trabajo organizativo de base y de la comunidad; honran el liderazgo de les sobrevivientes y defensores Negres, indígenas y de color; y promueven un verdadero cambio transformador que integra la justicia racial al centro de nuestras agencias.

Immigrant survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking, and human trafficking face unique challenges when accessing and maintaining safe housing. Housing is a primary concern for survivors living with violence because it directly affects their ability to leave an abusive relationship. COVID-19 has exacerbated problems as survivors are forced to stay at home – making violence in their homes more frequent and dangerous. For survivors looking for alternative, safe housing, there is misinformation among housing providers and survivor advocates about immigrant survivors’ eligibility for housing and homeless assistance programs. This document clarifies some misconceptions and provides resources and tools supporting advocacy on behalf of immigrant survivors.
