Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are becoming embedded in nearly every profession, and victim services are no exception. While AI does have the potential to save time and expand access to resources, these same tools can also introduce serious safety, privacy, and trust risks, especially when working with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, technology-facilitated abuse, and other forms of trauma.

The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV), recognizes both the promise and the peril of these emerging technologies. This guide is designed to share practical guidance and help victim service providers (VSPs) and other advocates make informed, mission-aligned decisions about whether and how to use AI tools in the context of victim services.

Safe Leave Working Group

The Safe Leave Working Group is made up of state, national, and tribal experts and advocates from across policy spaces, based on the principle that paid, protected leave from work is an essential tool for the safety, agency, and economic security of survivors of all types of violence, including gender-based violence and harassment, family and domestic violence, and sexual violence. The Center for American Progress and Futures Without Violence co-chair the working group.

This document builds upon the working group’s previously released product, The Need for Paid Safe Leave & Model Legislative Language, which provided model legislative language regarding paid safe leave. This document is intended to be a resource for policymakers, advocates, and stakeholders, as well as for employers seeking to improve their own policies. It includes recommendations for when workers can be required to provide documentation for safe leave claims, and, where required, what types of documentation options should be allowed. In addition, this document provides recommendations for confidentiality practices regarding safe leave use. Recognizing that paid sick and safe leave and paid family and medical leave laws raise similar but distinct considerations, the document provides separate recommendations for each type of law.

Have you ever had to carry out an action that felt fundamentally wrong in your work? Have you had to make a hard decision that went against your core values or beliefs? Have you witnessed deep harm happen that made you feel guilt or shame, and yet you were powerless to respond? You have likely experienced a moral injury at work.

In this webinar, Dr. Johnanna Ganz takes a deep dive into the key concepts of moral distress and moral injury, with a focus on what it is and how it can show up in mission-driven environments. Explore how moral distress and injury impact career sustainability and learn strategies on how to navigate the hard, the ugly, and the painful as well as naming your personal signs that it is time to leave the work.

Participants will be able to:

Define and describe the concepts of moral distress and moral injury
Explain how moral distress and injury decrease employee wellbeing and career sustainability in mission-driven work
Spend at least 20 minutes applying concepts and developing 1-2 personal strategies for managing moral distress and injury at work

About the presenter: Johnanna Ganz, Ph.D., is the founder of J. Ganz Consulting, LLC. Dr. Ganz works towards building sustainability for mission-driven agencies and their people. As a data nerd and bookworm, Dr. Ganz specializes in weaving together research, policy, best/emerging practices, and people’s lived experiences to foster real change for mission-driven people and their agencies.

Session 1: Supporting Black Survivors as Leaders in Our Movement

The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, in collaboration with partners from across the Northeast region of the United States, held our fourth virtual Prevention Town Hall on September 13 and 14, 2023.

This National Prevention Town Hall uplifted innovative prevention approaches in the Northeast region of the United States that build solidarity across movements to disrupt systems of violence that disproportionately harm Black women and gender expansive individuals. This two-day event explored ways to support Black survivors as leaders in our movement and build meaningful partnerships with Black-led movements and organizations. Presenters engaged participants in conversations around critical issues impacting Black women, youth, and gender expansive individuals including reproductive justice and housing as a basic human need and right.

El Centro Nacional de Recursos sobre Violencia Doméstica, en colaboración con socios de todo el sur de los Estados Unidos, llevó a cabo nuestro cuarto Ayuntamiento de Prevención virtual el 13 y 14 de septiembre de 2023.

Este Congreso Nacional de Prevención, promoverá los enfoques de prevención innovadores en la región noreste de los Estados Unidos que generan solidaridad entre los movimientos para interrumpir los sistemas de violencia que dañan desproporcionadamente a las mujeres negras y a las personas de género expansivo. Este evento de dos días, explorará formas de apoyar a les sobrevivientes de comunidades negras como líderes en nuestro movimiento y a crear relaciones significativas con organizaciones y movimientos lideradas por esta comunidad. Los presentadores involucrarán a los participantes en conversaciones sobre temas críticos que afectan a las mujeres negras, los jóvenes y las personas de género expansivo, que incluyen la justicia reproductiva y la vivienda como una necesidad y un derecho humano básico.

Every employer has survivor employees. With the number 1 obstacle to survivors' safety being financial insecurity, it is crucial that survivors find employment and build an income. However, research indicates that up to 60% of survivors lose their job as a result of GBV, and FreeFrom found that 90% of survivors are subjected to work interference by a harm-doer. This means that it is not enough to support survivors in finding employment, but also critical to support survivors in maintaining employment. FreeFrom models the workplace policies survivors say they need to stay employed, including living wage salaries, 401k accounts with an employer match, flexible work hours, paid and protected GBV leave and emergency safety grants, and more.

Leading with the shared vision that “All families deserve living conditions in which they can thrive,” this graphic illustration utilizes NRCDV’s Storytelling Framework to center survivors of color for whom economic insecurity poses significant barriers to safety and well-being. This resource makes the case for wage equity as a critical pathway to intimate partner violence prevention, and can be used with a variety of audiences as a tool to move people to action.

This infographic draws on lessons learned by advocates funded to advance prevention through CDC’s DELTA Impact program, specifically in their work to advance economic justice by promoting a thriving wage. It provides an overview of the systems of oppression that cause harm, especially to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, and offers tangible strategies to move toward racial and economic justice. It explores how we can change the conditions “so that survivors, especially Black women and gender expansive individuals, can thrive free from violence.”

This resource was developed by the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence in partnership with Domestic Violence Prevention Enhancement and Leadership Through Alliances (DELTA) Impact program recipients, guided and inspired by Joyce Kyles of Joyce Kyles Consulting. Through the DELTA Impact program, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funds State Domestic Violence Coalitions and their local communities to implement strategies and approaches designed to prevent intimate partner violence. DELTA Impact centers pay equity and promotes a thriving wage for survivors as a pathway to wellness and freedom from violence.

In 2020 the murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Ahmaud Arbery brought on a global racial reckoning, where many organizations made public and audacious declarations about shifting course from their anti-Black structures and oppressive decision-making process that have harmed Black, Brown, and Indigenous folks. Many of these statements were followed up by initial gestures to change course and examine a pathway forward that would be inclusive of operating through an anti-oppressive lens.

At the time, organizations were incentivized to make these commit to anti-racism. Since then, we’ve witnessed a white backlash while many organizations have maintained practices, policies, and internal cultures that continue to harm Black, Brown, and Indigenous people.

Three years on - Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities are still navigating forms of violence that remain rooted in white supremacy, anti-Blackness, and other forms of oppression. The impacts of these practices start on an individual level and expand organizationally.

Workshop participants will walk away with increased knowledge of the following concepts and movement history:

How oppression can manifest across the socio-ecological model and the importance of interrupting the early onset of oppression before it escalates to a macro level.
Historical contributions of Black early movement contributors and the values they leaned into that laid a foundation for the anti-violence work that we do today.
The negative impact of conflating transparent accountability culture with cancel culture, and the importance of distinguishing the two.
Frameworks for centering survivors who are most marginalized within a constantly shifting sociopolitical context.
