This Special Collection offers resources that promote strategies for creating environments where children can thrive with particular focus on enhancing capacity for resilience across the lifespan. While this collection emphasizes primary prevention strategies that foster healthy attitudes and behaviors, it also reflects our understanding of trauma as a common human experience, and explores post-traumatic growth as a positive framework for understanding trauma within the context of child development. Central to this collection is the belief that advocates working to end gender based violence are committed to the safety and well being of all children, and wish to create social change by investing in the potential that children offer – the promise of a new generation of non-violent, respectful young people and adults who resist traditional social norms that perpetuate violence against women and girls.

The resources in this collection are organized by intended audience and address all levels of the social ecological model. Here you’ll find materials for use by young people, parents and caregivers, teachers and school-based professionals, helping professionals, gender-based violence intervention and prevention advocates, and communities and organizations. Links to related Special Collections are also provided.

This collection was developed as a product of the Adult Children Exposed to Domestic Violence (ACE-DV) Leadership Forum, a project of the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence established to amplify the voices and experiences of ACE-DV to enhance our movement to end gender based violence. Special thanks to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, the Vermont Network Against Domestic Violence, and the University of Minnesota School of Social Work for supporting the development of this resource.

This Special Collection provides lessons learned and related resources from nine HHS-funded 3-year demonstration projects to enhance services to children and youth who have been exposed to domestic violence.

The authors suggest that preventing ACEs has considerable potential public health impacts in adolescence and beyond and might translate into sizable reductions in suicidal behaviors, substance use, sexual risk behaviors, violence, and persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness when these children reach adolescence.

This report presents the first lifetime national prevalence of self-reported individual and cumulative ACEs among U.S. high school students under 18 years of age, associations between cumulative ACE exposure and negative health conditions and risk behaviors in adolescence, and population-attributable fractions related to ACEs for each condition and behavior.

Findings include:

Students with four or more ACEs had signiﬁcantly increased prevalence ratios for 15 of 16 measured negative health conditions and risk behaviors compared with students with zero ACEs, demonstrating the marked association between cumulative ACEs and negative outcomes.
The strongest associations were observed between experiencing four or more ACEs and attempted suicide (OR = 12.42), seriously considered attempting suicide (OR = 9.15), and current prescription opioid misuse (OR = 8.95).
As the number of ACEs increased for most conditions and behaviors, adjusted prevalence ratios between cumulative ACEs count and health condition or risk behavior increased in magnitude, indicative of a dose-response relationship.
Three in four students (76.1%) experienced at least one ACE. Nearly one in ﬁve (18.5%) experienced four or more ACEs.
The most common ACEs were emotional abuse (61.5%), physical abuse (31.8%), and household poor mental health (28.4%).

This resource was developed to help communities and states focus on strategies with the greatest potential to prevent violence and promote health and safety. This prevention resource brings together examples based on the best available evidence. It outlines seven strategies to prevent community violence to ensure everyone can live in safe, healthy, and thriving communities.

The strategies and approaches described in this prevention resource are supported by the best available evidence and can be a critical tool for communities in their violence prevention efforts.

The prevention strategies are:

Strengthen economic security.
Provide quality education.
Create protective environments.
Promote healthy family relationships.
Strengthen youth and young adults’ skills.
Connect young people to caring adults and activities.
Intervene to lessen harms and prevent future risk.

This resource is an update to the Youth Violence Prevention Resource for Action released in 2016. It includes updated evidence for preventing violence in youth (ages 10-24) and adds examples for preventing violence in young adults (ages 25-34).

Community violence is a serious public health problem in the United States. For youth ages 10 to 24 years, homicide is the second leading cause of death, and for young adults ages 25 to 34, it is the third leading cause of death. Additionally, approximately 800,000 young people are treated in U.S. emergency departments each year for injuries resulting from interpersonal violence. This resource also describes the social and structural contexts for community violence that these strategies might help address. Throughout the document, we focus on improving the conditions that increase risk for violence. Communities can prioritize a comprehensive approach that addresses the underlying drivers of violence while also reducing the immediate risks.

Many communities are implementing effective strategies for prevention. The strategies and approaches in this prevention resource are intended to be combined with existing community-led prevention approaches. Everyone can play a role in putting the evidence into action as we work together towards communities free from violence.

The seeds for this survey were planted in the months following the murder of George Floyd in 2020. Like the advocates at our member programs, ODVN wanted to better understand how survivors—women of color, specifically, along with other marginalized groups—experience law enforcement and other parts of the response system. We surveyed 505 survivors across the state to get some answers.
