While research is limited, the research that is available indicates that <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/pdf/cdc_nisvs_victimization_final-a.pdf">members of LGBTQ communities experience domestic and sexual violence at rates that are equal to or higher than non-LGBTQ people</a>, particularly when they hold additional marginalized identities, such as being a woman of color or an undocumented immigrant.</p> <p>And while they experience high rates of violence, LGBTQ survivors also often face significant barriers to safety and accessing services, such as historical over-incarceration and harassment by police, unintended outing, discrimination by service providers, and a lack of culturally responsive services that can result in revictimization. Additional layers of oppression often add to these barriers – the <a href="/material/2015-us-transgender-survey-report">2015 U.S. Transgender Survey (USTS)</a> found that “transgender people of color who completed the survey experienced deeper and broader forms of discrimination than white USTS respondents,” and although they experienced higher rates of interpersonal violence, Black respondents reported less comfort reaching out to police, medical professionals, and shelters for help. Additionally, the lack of LGBTQ-inclusive violence prevention efforts and healthy relationship programming in most communities results in low levels of awareness of the prevalence and impact of domestic and sexual violence in LGBTQ communities. This special collection is intended to help domestic violence organizations address these gaps in services for LGBTQ survivors.</p> <p>The information in this special collection offers an overview of research and resources that are currently available on preventing and responding to domestic violence within LGBTQ communities. Resources provided in this special collection are especially relevant to organizations and individuals who want to increase their capacity to provide culturally responsive intervention services to the LGBTQ survivors of domestic violence and to those who want to work with LGBTQ communities on prevention strategies.</p> <p>This special collection draws from the work of many leaders around the United States who focus specifically on the issue of domestic violence within LGBTQ communities. We want to specifically highlight the work on a national level that the <a href="https://avp.org/" target="_blank">National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs</a> (NCAVP), <a href="http://nwnetwork.org/" target="_blank">The Northwest Network</a>, the <a href="http://lgbtqipv.org/">National LGBTQ Institute on IPV</a>, <a href="http://tnlr.org/" target="_blank">The Network/La Red</a>, and <a href="https://forge-forward.org/">FORGE</a> have done in partnership with these communities. Additionally, a <a href="/sc/organizations-focused-dv-lgbtq-communities">list of organizations</a> working around the issue of domestic violence in LGBTQ communities is provided at the end of this special collection.</p> <p>Originally developed by the Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse, this collection was updated in 2019 by the National LGBTQ Institute on IPV in partnership with the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence. For more extensive information specific to transgender and non-binary survivors, see our <a href="/sc/serving-trans-and-non-binary-survivors-domestic-and-sexual-violence">Serving Trans and Non-Binary Survivors of Domestic and Sexual Violence</a> special collection. This Special Collection supports advocates and agencies seeking to build their capacity to provide accessible and inclusive services to trans and non-binary survivors.</p> <p>This collection offers guidance on how to provide accessible, culturally responsive, and affirming services to survivors of all genders. It includes resources that explain the importance of pronouns and outline some key concepts and terms relating to gender identity and expression. Additionally, this collection cites recent research illustrating the broad scope of violence against trans individuals and communities, particularly for people who live at the intersections of multiple forms of oppression, and addresses the failure of systems to properly support survivors in these communities. It directs service providers to some helpful tools and guidance for promoting inclusivity and advocating for trans survivors within domestic and sexual violence organizations. Lastly, this collection also provides resources for survivors.</p> <p>This collection draws heavily from the work of <a href="http://forge-forward.org/">FORGE</a>, a national transgender anti-violence organization that provides direct services to trans survivors of domestic and sexual violence, as well as training and technical assistance to service providers around the country. Institutions and establishments in our society categorize and label human experience in ways that fail to recognize those with sexualities and gender identities outside of the confines of heterosexuality and gender as based on biological sex. These current definitions of human sexuality and gender identity limit our understanding of the LGBTIQ communities. Recognizing that no grouping of letters, LGBTIQ or otherwise, could fully grasp the continuum of sexuality and gender identity, the select resources and research in this special collection illustrates the LGBTIQ communities’ experiences with sexual violence within the US. Resources especially relevant to these individuals, as well as straight allies and professionals, address the issue of sexual violence in LGBTIQ communities, relationships, and the impact on society.</p> <p>LGBTIQ-identified populations experience sexual violence at the same rate, and according to some sources, at higher rates, as the heterosexual population (<a href="http://www.gaylesbiantimes.com/?id=5157" target="_blank">Gay &amp; Lesbian Times</a>). Individuals may experience sexual violence from anyone: acquaintances, intimate partners, or strangers. According to several reports, people who identify as LGBTIQ are more likely to experience sexual violence by a stranger than their heterosexual counterparts (<a href="http://www.morris.umn.edu/services/ViolencePrevention/Lgbt%20sexual%20assault%20pamphlet.pdf" target="_blank">UMM Violence Prevention Center</a>). Additionally, some individuals perpetrate hate crimes by targeting individuals who are or who they perceive to be LGBTIQ and use sexual assault, rape, and harassment as the form of violence.</p> <p>LGBTIQ individuals often face additional challenges and barriers in reporting sexual violence and seeking services after trauma. Among these challenges, unintended outing, discrimination by reporting sources, additional harassment, and a lack of culturally competent services revictimize those who identify as LGBTIQ by creating a hostile environment. Anyone who experiences sexual violence deserves a safe space for healing, and this collection provides resources to aid in creating that safe space for LGBTIQ individuals.</p> <p>The <a href="http://www.nsvrc.org/" target="_blank">National Sexual Violence Resource Center</a> gathered this collection in an effort to create an environment of cultural competence when serving or working with LGBTIQ-identified individuals. It complements the resources in the parallel collection, <a href="/sc/preventing-and-responding-domestic-violence-lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender-or-queer-lgbtq" target="_blank">Preventing and Responding to Domestic Violence in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or Queer (LGBTQ) Communities</a>. This gallery tour can allow us to learn about what’s being mobilized beyond the systems we often work in for violence prevention. A panel follows the gallery tour so we can weave together meaningful connections and address questions about reconnection, restoration, and re-indigenizing practices in the Mountain region.</p> <p>Presenters explore creative, sustainable approaches for advancing social change in the face of uncertainty. Across all aspects of our movement work - from housing rights to survivor healing to restorative justice - each of us plays a critical part in creating the world we wish to live into together. This prevention resource brings together examples based on the best available evidence. It outlines seven strategies to prevent community violence to ensure everyone can live in safe, healthy, and thriving communities.</p> <p>The strategies and approaches described in this prevention resource are supported by the best available evidence and can be a critical tool for communities in their violence prevention efforts.</p> <p>The prevention strategies are:</p> <ul> <li>Strengthen economic security.</li> <li>Provide quality education.</li> <li>Create protective environments.</li> <li>Promote healthy family relationships.</li> <li>Strengthen youth and young adults’ skills.</li> <li>Connect young people to caring adults and activities.</li> <li>Intervene to lessen harms and prevent future risk.</li> </ul> <p>This resource is an update to the Youth Violence Prevention Resource for Action released in 2016. It includes updated evidence for preventing violence in youth (ages 10-24) and adds examples for preventing violence in young adults (ages 25-34).</p> <p>Community violence is a serious public health problem in the United States. For youth ages 10 to 24 years, homicide is the second leading cause of death, and for young adults ages 25 to 34, it is the third leading cause of death. Additionally, approximately 800,000 young people are treated in U.S. emergency departments each year for injuries resulting from interpersonal violence. This resource also describes the social and structural contexts for community violence that these strategies might help address. Throughout the document, we focus on improving the conditions that increase risk for violence. Communities can prioritize a comprehensive approach that addresses the underlying drivers of violence while also reducing the immediate risks.</p> <p>Many communities are implementing effective strategies for prevention. The strategies and approaches in this prevention resource are intended to be combined with existing community-led prevention approaches. Everyone can play a role in putting the evidence into action as we work together towards communities free from violence.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-links field--type-link field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Associated Links</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/violence-prevention/media/pdf/resources-for-action/CV-Prevention-Resource-for-Action_508.pdf?ACSTrackingID=USCDC_1104-DM125981&amp;ACSTrackingLabel=CDC%20releases%20the%20new%20Community%20Violence%20Prevention%20Resource%20for%20Action%20&amp;deliveryName=USCDC_1104-DM125981" target="_blank">Community Violence Prevention Resource for Action</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/violence-prevention/media/pdf/resources-for-action/CV-RFA-Exec-Summary_508.pdf?ACSTrackingID=USCDC_1104-DM125981&amp;ACSTrackingLabel=CDC%20releases%20the%20new%20Community%20Violence%20Prevention%20Resource%20for%20Action%20&amp;deliveryName=USCDC_1104-DM125981" target="_blank">1-pager</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/community-violence/about/index.html?ACSTrackingID=USCDC_1104-DM125981&amp;ACSTrackingLabel=CDC%20releases%20the%20new%20Community%20Violence%20Prevention%20Resource%20for%20Action%20&amp;deliveryName=USCDC_1104-DM125981" target="_blank">About Community Violence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/youth-violence/about/index.html?ACSTrackingID=USCDC_1104-DM125981&amp;ACSTrackingLabel=CDC%20releases%20the%20new%20Community%20Violence%20Prevention%20Resource%20for%20Action%20&amp;deliveryName=USCDC_1104-DM125981" target="_blank">About Youth Violence</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-material-categories field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Material Categories</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/collaboration-bridge-building" hreflang="und">Collaboration / Bridge Building</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/community-organizing-mobilization-engagement" hreflang="und">Community Organizing / Mobilization / Engagement</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/coordinated-community-response" hreflang="und">Coordinated Community Response</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/movement-building" hreflang="und">Movement Building</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/core-competencies" hreflang="und">Core Competencies</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/prevention-programming" hreflang="und">Prevention Programming</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/child-welfare" hreflang="und">Child Welfare</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/economic-justice" hreflang="und">Economic Justice</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/lgbtq-rights" hreflang="und">LGBTQ Rights</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/health-public-health" hreflang="und">Health / Public Health</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/human-trafficking" hreflang="und">Human Trafficking</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/young-people" hreflang="und">Young People</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 16 Aug 2024 12:42:40 +0000 ckeene 13221 at https://vawnet.org ARP Series: What is the connection between COVID-19 and domestic violence, and how do these two issues impact transgender and non-binary individuals? https://vawnet.org/material/arp-series-what-connection-between-covid-19-and-domestic-violence-and-how-do-these-two <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">ARP Series: What is the connection between COVID-19 and domestic violence, and how do these two issues impact transgender and non-binary individuals?</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/berdman" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">berdman</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Mon, 03/17/2025 - This report fills gaps in research about the lifetime experiences of sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence experienced by U.S. women and men separately by sexual identity. This report focuses on the recent findings from NISVS of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and straight/heterosexual individuals' lifetime violence victimization experiences. </p> <p><em>Key findings:</em></p> <h4>While women and men of all sexual identities experienced sexual violence in their lifetimes, women reported experiencing a substantial sexual violence burden, especially bisexual women.</h4> <ul> <li>4 in 5 (almost 80%) bisexual women and over 56% of bisexual men reported experiencing contact sexual violence in their lifetimes. </li> <li>3 in 5 (almost 60%) of both lesbian women and gay men reported experiencing contact sexual violence.</li> <li>Over 53% of heterosexual women and over 29% of heterosexual men reported experiencing contact sexual violence. </li> <li>More than 1 in 4 lesbian women and almost 2 in 4 bisexual women reported to researchers they experienced rape during their lifetimes. </li> <li>About a quarter of gay men and 3% of heterosexual men reported to researchers they experienced rape during their lifetimes. </li> <li>One in 4 gay men and 1 in 5 bisexual men were made to penetrate someone else during their lifetimes. </li> </ul> <h4>Systems of oppression contribute to higher rates of sexual violence. These systems include racism, sexism, and heterosexism, among others. For those impacted by one or more of these oppressions, the risk of sexual violence increases. Over half of non-Hispanic white lesbian women (58.6%) experienced contact sexual violence in their lifetime.</h4> <ul> <li>1 in 4 non-Hispanic white lesbian women reported to researchers they experienced rape. </li> <li>Half of all Hispanic gay men (49.5%) and 61.2% non-Hispanic white gay men experienced contact sexual violence</li> <li>Over 27% of Hispanic, almost 34% of non-Hispanic Black, and over 29% non-Hispanic white heterosexual men experienced contact sexual violence</li> <li>About half of all Hispanic bisexual women reported to researchers they experienced rape.  </li> <li>Over half of non-Hispanic bisexual women reported to researchers they experienced rape. </li> <li>Over 26% of non-Hispanic white gay men reported to researchers they experienced rape in their lifetime. </li> </ul> <h4>Victims generally know those who harm them. </h4> <ul> <li>Most women and men across all sexual identities who experienced contact sexual violence reported that the person who harmed them was someone they knew. </li> <li>Over one-third (36.7%) of bisexual women reported experiencing contact sexual violence by a stranger. </li> <li>Almost 45% of victims who were gay men reported being raped by an acquaintance, including over 30% by a former or current intimate partner. </li> </ul> <h4>Sex of Perpetrator: (Contact Sexual Violence)</h4> <ul> <li>Over 72% of lesbian victims reported only having male perpetrators; 1 in 5 (20%) had both male and female perpetrators. </li> <li>Over 74% of bisexual women victims reported only having male perpetrators; 1 in 6 (16.7%) had both male and female perpetrators. </li> <li>Over 89% of heterosexual women victims had only male perpetrators and .5% had only female perpetrators.</li> <li>75.3% of gay men reported only having male perpetrators 1 in 6 had both male and female perpetrators.</li> <li>1 in 3 bisexual male victims reported only having male perpetrators.</li> <li>1 in 5 heterosexual male victims reported only male perpetrators, 1 in 2 had only female perpetrators, and about 1 in 6 had both male and female perpetrators. </li> </ul> <h4>Young people are targeted by those who sexually offend.</h4> <p>More than half of all female victims and one-third of all male victims of contact sexual violence first experienced victimization before the age of 18, regardless of sexual identity. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth might experience violence at even younger ages. Nearly 1 in 3 lesbian and bisexual female victims and 1 in 6 gay men reported experiencing their first contact sexual violence at the age of 10 or younger. </p> <p>Creating safe, supportive, and inclusive environments for everyone is key to preventing sexual violence. Preventing sexual violence means we all must address deep-rooted abuses of power that contribute to inequities in health, safety, and well-being. A <a data-uw-pdf-br="2" data-uw-pdf-doc="" href="https://www.nsvrc.org/sites/default/files/2021-06/health_equity_approach_to_preventing_sv_final508_0.pdf">health equity approach</a> to preventing sexual violence means that we need to both understand and address the factors that contribute to violence and safety and factors that expose some communities — especially communities that have been historically oppressed — to higher rates of sexual violence. By leading with health equity, we can work together to build collective power and create the kind of equitable, respectful communities we want to live in.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-links field--type-link field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Associated Links</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/pdf/nisvs/nisvsReportonSexualIdentity.pdf" target="_blank">National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey: 2016/2017 Report on Victi…</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-material-categories field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Material Categories</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/prevention-programming" hreflang="und">Prevention Programming</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/lgbtq-rights" hreflang="und">LGBTQ Rights</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/domestic-violence" hreflang="und">Domestic Violence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/sexual-orientation-gender-identity" hreflang="und">Sexual Orientation / Gender Identity</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/sexual-violence" hreflang="und">Sexual Violence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/materials/stalking" hreflang="und">Stalking</a></div> </div> </div> Mon, 16 Oct 2023 14:36:06 +0000 berdman 12990 at https://vawnet.org Queer and Trans Asians and Pacific Islanders: Strengths, Resources, and Barriers for Preventing Domestic Violence-Related Homicides https://vawnet.org/material/queer-and-trans-asians-and-pacific-islanders-strengths-resources-and-barriers-preventing <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Queer and Trans Asians and Pacific Islanders: Strengths, Resources, and Barriers for Preventing Domestic Violence-Related Homicides</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/berdman" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">berdman</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Wed, 10/18/2023 - 11:57</span> <div class="field field--name-field-material-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item">General Material</div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=12995&amp;2=bookmark" token="kprHr4ZHRWhIhW_w0Z7IxoNi0eIMlIcoSwU4nDhCxG8"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="field field--name-field-published-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Published Date</div> <div class="field__item">October, 2023</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-publisher field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Publisher(s)</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/publisher/asian-pacific-institute-gender-based-violence-apigbv" hreflang="en">Asian Pacific Institute on Gender-Based Violence (APIGBV)</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Author(s)</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author/fatima-arain" hreflang="en">Fatima Arain</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author/susan-ghanbarpour" hreflang="en">Susan Ghanbarpour</a></div> </div> </div> <span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_20 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="https://vawnet.org/material/queer-and-trans-asians-and-pacific-islanders-strengths-resources-and-barriers-preventing" data-a2a-title="Queer and Trans Asians and Pacific Islanders: Strengths, Resources, and Barriers for Preventing Domestic Violence-Related Homicides"><a class="a2a_button_facebook"></a><a class="a2a_button_twitter"></a><a class="a2a_button_linkedin"></a><a class="a2a_dd addtoany_share" href="https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Fvawnet.org%2Fmaterial%2Fqueer-and-trans-asians-and-pacific-islanders-strengths-resources-and-barriers-preventing&amp;title=Queer%20and%20Trans%20Asians%20and%20Pacific%20Islanders%3A%20Strengths%2C%20Resources%2C%20and%20Barriers%20for%20Preventing%20Domestic%20Violence-Related%20Homicides"></a></span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>This report presents a groundbreaking qualitative research project focusing on the prevention of domestic violence-related homicides among queer and trans Asians and Pacific Islanders (QTAPI).
