The narratives of adult children exposed to domestic violence (ACE-DV) inspire us to explore assets and strengths, shift from deficit to growth, and promote healing and resilience. Their stories bring critical perspectives to the complexity of survivors’ choices, the humanity of those who use violence, the power of a loving community, the ways in which our trauma experiences shape us, and the possibility of accountability and change.

However, input gathered from ACE-DV-identified advocates in the movement to end domestic violence revealed that they do not feel supported in bringing their multiple identities to their work. When aspiring storytellers who participated in our Speakers Bureau inventory and needs assessment were asked where support was needed to increase their storytelling capacity, they asked for validation “that my story is worth telling and being heard, and that it is instrumental for the work of the movement” (Survey Participant, 2018). Survivors feel pressured to choose between their advocate and survivor identities, and to make the case for the value of their personal experiences within our own movement. Furthermore, the stories of Black-identified survivors have been devalued and historically left out of narratives about surviving and thriving after childhood trauma.

The Adult Children Exposed to Domestic Violence (ACE-DV) project offers a unique space to amplify the voices and experiences of those who identify as ACE-DV, driven by their purpose, To Center Humanity as Healing. The ACE-DV Speakers Initiative is an important component of this project, valuing the perspectives that our layered identities and complex experiences bring, and encouraging and supporting survivors of trauma and oppression in bringing their whole selves to this work.

This Toolkit offers a variety of practical resources and tools to help build the capacity of adult survivors of children’s exposure to impact change through storytelling. Materials are accessible in a variety of formats to suit the diverse learning styles of this audience.

Speaker’s Guide

From the Front of the Room: Sharing Your Childhood Story of Domestic Violence (December 2017)

This guide, designed for adult survivors, explores the power of storytelling and the unique value that stories of adult children exposed to domestic violence can bring to social change movements, offering guidance for 1) assessing readiness, 2) finding your voice, 3) clarifying your message, and 4) attending to your wellness. Considerations for speaking to key audiences are also included.

NRCDV's 2023 National Prevention Youth Summit took place February 27-28, 2023. This inaugural youth-led event centered the voices, experiences, and wisdom of youth leaders engaged in social change work. It explored the ways in which promoting health equity for youth is critical to building healthy relationships and communities. Over two days, participants learned how positive pleasure-based sexuality and fostering racial equity are connected and necessary to creating conditions where youth can thrive.

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a presidentially designated observance designed to educate the public about human trafficking and the role they can play in preventing and responding to human trafficking. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ theme for Human Trafficking Prevention Month 2023 is Partner to Prevent. This is an opportunity to highlight the power of partnerships and collaboration in strengthening anti-trafficking efforts. Preventing human trafficking cannot be accomplished alone; rather, we must build partnerships across all sectors of society to improve the lives of those we serve. When we #Partner2Prevent, we can enhance our efforts to keep everyone safe from human trafficking.

This campaign aims to educate, empower, and provide resources to social service providers, healthcare and behavioral healthcare providers, school-based professionals, and other allied professionals to increase awareness and foster partnerships. This toolkit breaks the month down into focus weeks to ensure clear messaging and resource sharing. Sample social media posts, sample email and newsletter content, and resources that we encourage you to share throughout the month of January are also included.

The 2022 National Call for Unity centers on the theme for DVAM, No Survivor Justice Without Racial Justice: Cultivating Joy Towards Liberation. The Call for Unity is centered around our collective liberation, each of us "being the work" to authentically respond to survivors' and advocates' call for justice, healing and equity. Through inspiring messages, the speakers share their personal experiences in the movement in order to humanize the work of advocates who contribute daily to the efforts to end domestic violence.

Creating a world free from violence requires us to boldly and unapologetically confront and dismantle white supremacy, anti-Blackness, and other forms of oppression. It means acknowledging the impact of colonialism, slavery, and other historical trauma on our hearts, practices, and structures. It requires us to live into our values - individually, in relationship with others, and in our organizations and larger movement.

The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, in collaboration with partners from across the Pacific Coast region of the United States, held our third virtual Prevention Town Hall on September 14 and 15, 2022. This event was an opportunity to dig deeply into the theme “Prevention is Radical” across 2 days.

This event uplifted innovative prevention approaches in the Pacific Coast region of the United States that are community-driven, rooted in cultural strengths, and focused on relationship building. Together, participants explored how our work is connected to and impacted by our current social and political reality, and what part each of us plays actualizing collective liberation.

Para crear un mundo libre de violencia requiere que confrontemos y desmantelemos con valentía y sin disculpas la supremacía blanca, la lucha contra la negritud y otras formas de opresión. Significa reconocer el impacto del colonialismo, la esclavitud y otros traumas históricos en nuestros corazones, prácticas y estructuras. Requiere que vivamos de acuerdo con nuestros valores, individualmente, en relación con los demás y en nuestras organizaciones y movimientos más grandes.

El Centro Nacional de Recursos sobre Violencia Doméstica, en colaboración con socios de todo el sur de los Estados Unidos, llevó a cabo nuestro tercer Ayuntamiento de Prevención virtual el 14 y 15 de septiembre de 2022. Este evento fué una oportunidad para profundizar en el tema La Prevención es Radical por 2 días.

Este evento promovió enfoques de prevención innovadores en la región de la costa del Pacífico de los Estados Unidos centrados en la comunidad, enfocados las fortalezas culturales y en la construcción de relaciones. Juntos, los participantes exploraron cómo nuestro trabajo está conectado e impactado por nuestra realidad social y política actual, y el papel que cada person juega en la actualización de la liberación colectiva.
