Lesbian, gay, bi, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) people experience domestic violence at the same or higher rates than heterosexual cisgender people. The isolating nature of domestic violence can be particularly harmful for LGBTQ people due to the ongoing and intersecting impacts of homophobia, transphobia, and racism. This research report shares common stories and experiences of over 574 LGBTQ survivors at non-LGBTQ and LGBTQ-specific organizations.

Research and evaluation can be powerful tools for community-based programs in the gender-based violence (GBV) field. Systematic inquiry can help advocates examine how well their programs are working, identify issues affecting their communities, and better understand survivors’ strengths and needs. However, these tools also have a history of being used to harm marginalized communities, overburden GBV staff and organizations, and reproduce systemic inequities.

Given this history, how can community-based programs conduct research and evaluation in ways that avoid replicating harms and instead center survivors and advance social justice? This webinar will explore key strategies to help achieve these goals, such as expanding our definitions of evidence and employing trauma-informed, language justice, and participatory approaches. The presenters are researchers with experience in community-based participatory research (CBPR) and culturally responsive and equitable evaluation (CREE). The webinar aims to provide participants with concrete strategies and considerations for how to integrate more equity and justice-focused approaches in their GBV research and evaluation.

La investigación y la evaluación pueden ser herramientas poderosas para los programas comunitarios en el campo de la violencia de género (VG). La investigación sistemática puede ayudar a los defensores a examinar qué tan bien están funcionando sus programas, identificar problemas emergentes que afectan a sus comunidades y comprender mejor las fortalezas y necesidades de los sobrevivientes. Sin embargo, estas herramientas también tienen una larga historia de uso para dañar a las comunidades marginadas, sobrecargar al personal y las organizaciones de VG y reproducir desigualdades sistémicas.

Dada esta historia, ¿cómo pueden los programas comunitarios realizar investigaciones y evaluaciones de manera que eviten la replicación de daños y en cambio, centren a los sobrevivientes y promuevan la justicia social? Este seminario web explorará estrategias clave para ayudar a lograr estos objetivos, como ampliar nuestras definiciones de evidencia y emplear enfoques participativos, de justicia lingüística y basados en el trauma. Los presentadores son investigadores con experiencia en investigación participativa basada en la comunidad (CBPR) y evaluación culturalmente receptiva y equitativa (CREE). El seminario web tiene como objetivo proporcionar a los participantes estrategias y consideraciones concretas sobre cómo integrar enfoques más centrados en la equidad y la justicia en su investigación y evaluación de la violencia de género.

As increasing light is shed on the limitations of criminal legal responses to domestic violence, calls for community-based solutions that do not involve the criminal legal system are growing louder. Mandatory reporting laws pose a significant challenge in making this shift, however, by connecting many informal and formal domestic violence supports to criminal and legal institutions.

This Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month (TDVAM) webinar explores the impact of mandatory reporting on domestic violence survivors, highlighting unique impacts for LGBTQ young people. Presenters share findings from a 2016 survey that examined how mandatory reporting affects the help-seeking of domestic violence survivors. Presenters also identify practical strategies advocates can use to decrease negative consequences of reporting and increase survivor safety and self-determination.

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is an approach to research in which researchers and community members share power, resources, and decision-making at every level of the research process, working together to enhance the understanding of a given phenomenon and integrating that knowledge with action to improve the health and well-being of those most affected.

This toolkit is for researchers across disciplines and social locations who are working in academic, policy, community, or practice-based settings. In particular, the toolkit provides support to emerging researchers as they consider whether and how to take a CBPR approach and what it might mean in the context of their professional roles and settings. Domestic violence advocates will also find useful information on the CBPR approach and how it can help answer important questions about your work.
