The training explains that child sexual abuse can affect children of any socioeconomic background, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation. Its effects can include PTSD, depression, anxiety, anger, nightmares, sleep problems, difficulty trusting others, behavioral changes, regression, aggression, and problems in school. It can also increase the risk of substance use, risky sexual behavior, eating disorders, and long-term physical health problems. The training stresses that these behaviors should not simply be viewed as misconduct; they may be manifestations of trauma that adults, including teachers, need to recognize and respond to appropriately. Importantly, experiencing abuse does not mean a child’s future is determined by it, and supportive relationships can help build resilience.

The training emphasizes that child sexual abuse can affect children in any community and that perpetrators often use grooming to build trust, isolate children, and gradually push boundaries while also gaining the trust of surrounding adults. Warning signs can include sudden behavioral changes, reluctance to be around a particular person, increased secrecy, or concerning patterns of attention and gifts. Adults should maintain open communication with children, avoid leaving them alone with someone who raises concerns, involve other trusted adults or institutions when appropriate, and report reasonable suspicions to law enforcement, child protective services, or the appropriate child abuse hotline. If a child discloses abuse, adults should listen, believe and reassure the child, make them feel safe, avoid blaming them, and allow trained professionals to handle the investigation. The central message is that children should not be responsible for protecting themselves from abuse; adults must create safe environments, recognize potential warning signs, and act when concerns arise.
