The links between disasters and violence either self-directed or interpersonal are recognized, but the amount of research is limited. This article discusses the underlying association of disasters and violence and outlines a systematic review of the literature from 1976 to 2011.

Many countries have reported increases in relationship violence in the wake of disasters. However, there is a research gap on why this happens, and how increased violence may relate to disaster experiences. Women's Health Goulburn North East undertook the first Australian research into this phenomenon, interviewing 30 women and 47 disaster workers in Victoria after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

Several studies have demonstrated a positive relationship between exposure to natural disasters or other extreme events and rates of interpersonal violence (IPV), and people experiencing IPV in the post-disaster period may face unique barriers, including loss of access to safe housing and a need to remain with family to qualify for or obtain financial assistance and other types of disaster aid. This report assesses the potential association between exposure to natural disasters and reports of IPV.

Persons experiencing homelessness may be at risk for infection during an outbreak of COVID-19. This interim guidance is intended to support response planning by homeless service providers, including overnight emergency shelters, day shelters, and meal service providers.
