In this presentation, Melissa McCracken explores the unique ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic affected LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly those with histories of trauma, shame, discrimination, or substance use. Drawing connections between the COVID-19 pandemic and the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the webinar discusses increases in alcohol and drug use, overdose deaths, pornography consumption, social isolation, and behavioral addictions such as compulsive shopping, gambling, and gaming. The presentation also examines how stigma, secrecy, fear, and minority stress can contribute to maladaptive coping strategies and unhealthy patterns of sexual behavior within LGBTQIA+ communities.
