The new definition of rape, announced by the Attorney General in January of 2012, accounts for all forms of rape, regardless of the victim’s gender, relationship to the offender, or the mode of penetration. It also includes instances in which the victim is incapable of giving consent because of temporary or permanent mental or physical incapacity or because of age. This fact sheet addresses the need for public information to explain an anticipated uptick in rape statistics and more in regards to funding.
