This reader-friendly handbook discusses some of the different forms of violence perpetrated against women in Brazil, including domestic violence, sexual abuse, and human trafficking. The publication provides a brief discussion of sexism, highlighting the many ways in which this oppressive system manifests in the Brazilian society. It also highlights the role of the women's movement in helping bring about important social changes. A brief overview is provided of the public policies and legislative changes enacted in recent years that aim at protecting women's rights and promoting gender equality. Finally, suggestions on how to use the handbook for public education and awareness purposes as well as recommendations for community action and public policies are also presented.
