This article describes Dr. Sandra Bloom’s Sanctuary Model as an operating system that helps human services organizations function in a humane, democratic, and socially responsible manner. While focused on organizations with a treatment function, the focus on the “seven commitments” (nonviolence, emotional intelligence, social learning, open communication, democracy, social responsibility, and growth and change) is also relevant to advocacy organizations.
