This fact sheet provides information on the methods and main findings of the 'WHO Multi-country Study on Women's Health and Domestic Violence,' with regard to the phenomenon of intimate partner violence against women in Brazil. (Information available in English, French and Spanish.)

This resource explains what FGM is and detail some of its consequences. It also calls on agencies and communities to develop, strengthen, and support specific and concrete actions directed towards ending female genital mutilation.

It is intended primarily for economists, public health experts and researchers interested in conducting studies of this nature.

It identifies the gaps - and the many strengths - in current development agency violence prevention priorities and proposes a strengthened agenda for more effective violence prevention. It also puts forward concrete proposals to build up the institutional foundations necessary for violence prevention at both national and international levels.

The report describes how fear of violence and/or violence affects the uptake of HIV testing and counselling programmes and disclosure of HIV status. It highlights programmes that have addressed violence against women in HIV testing and counselling including through training of counsellors, couple counselling, and addressing HIV/AIDS in services for women experiencing intimate partner violence.

The review analyzed data from 58 evaluation studies of interventions with men and boys. Interventions were rated on their gender approach, using the following categories: gender-neutral - programs that distinguish little between the needs of men and women, neither reinforcing nor questioning gender roles; gender-sensitive - programs that recognize the specific needs and realities of men based on the social construction of gender roles; or gender-transformative - approaches that seek to transform gender roles and promote more gender-equitable relationships between men and women.

This document follows on a 2006 expert consultation on ethical, safety and methodological issues in researching, monitoring and documenting sexual violence in emergencies. The document addresses the unique set of challenges when collecting and using information about sexual violence and provides much needed guidance in the area of ethical and safety guidelines specific to collection of information about sexual violence in emergencies.
