Bystander Intervention: From Research to Practice

Event Date
Wednesday, July 15, 2020, 02:00PM

Bystander intervention is a common approach toward preventing sexual and intimate partner violence and one that has helped elevate the role that every member of a community plays in prevention. Bystander behaviors vary by action, recipients, context, and time, and new research on what makes bystander intervention effective and for whom is continually emerging.

Join PreventConnect on this web conference with a bystander intervention researcher and practitioners to dissect recent research on bystander intervention and discuss opportunities and challenges for implementing bystander intervention programs that do more than change attitudes, but create behavior change to protect against violence and harm. Guests will also discuss opportunities for building successful researcher and practitioner collaborations to advance prevention. Specific themes of the research include (1) the effectiveness of bystander intervention programs, specified by gender and race/ethnicity when applicable; (2) the outcomes and consequences students experience when intervening, including the relationship between bystander training and perpetration/victimization; and (3) best practices in measuring bystander outcomes.
