Calling In the Calling Out Culture: Compassionate Accountability in These Times

Event Date
Tuesday, April 07, 2020, 04:00PM

Many social justice activists believe that calling people out for their mistakes is how we end oppression. Fighting against injustices are the dues we pay for the privilege of being conscious, and we are honored to be able challenge these evils by recognizing that consciousness is the ultimate privilege. This requires activists to be responsible to their missions and to each other. We can build a unified and strategic human rights movement that weaves our strengths together, and that uses our differences as a platform for modeling a positive future built on justice and the politics of love. We can reject the politics of fear and prejudice and reject punishment and exile techniques adopted from the prison industrial complex. However, to create this forward-looking movement we need to make a commitment to recognize and support each other – calling people in rather than calling them out by transforming toxic activist practices to avoid sucking the energy out of our work.
