Making Our Homes and Community Safer: Responding to Afghan Evacuees

Location Name
Virtual
Event Date
Wednesday, January 26, 2022, 02:00PM

Following the sudden withdrawal of U.S. military presence from Afghanistan in 2021, nearly 100,000 Afghan refugees were evacuated to the United States. Tens of thousands still remain on U.S. military bases, with resettlement to happen by the end of January 2022. Evacuees now face uncertainty related to their immigration status, concern about families back in Afghanistan, and the challenge of acclimating to life in the U.S.

This webinar will be hosted by API-GBV and presented by Women for Afghan Women (WAW), which has been at the front line of ensuring a safe and dignified transition for Afghan refugees through family counseling, education, vocational training, coalition-building, and more. Naheed Samadi Bahram, WAW's U.S. Country Director, will join us to discuss some of the challenges recent arrivals face, what resources are available, and how service providers can respond to and identify cases of gender-based violence.
