Unpacking Binary Systems of Sex and Gender

Event Date
Tuesday, November 14, 2017, 12:00PM

Drawing on their nearly 25 years together in the Trans Liberation and anti-violence movements, presenters Jake Fawcett and Connie Burk will unpack the dominant culture binary system of sex and gender. They will discuss the mechanisms of this system, demonstrate how it relies on white supremacy, colonization and consumerism as much as heteropatriarchy, and discuss how the system creates and enforces rigid expectations for people of all genders and sexual orientations.

Jake and Connie will argue that our current movements can learn from history and avoid the traps of pursuing respectability and controlling language and expression in the hopes of gaining inclusion in the status quo.

They will also explore how our experiences relate and how our struggles for justice and liberation could be linked rather than divided. In particular, they will argue that liberation struggles of trans and gender non-conforming people and non-trans women are the ultimately the same.
