Mobilizing Communities to Prevent Domestic Violence: A Resource Guide for Organizations in East and Southern Africa

This resource guide describes a five-phased process of community mobilization, using five key strategies and participatory activities. The goal is to help organizations develop and implement a domestic violence project in their communities. Included here are full color examples of communication materials, a comprehensive community activism course, and planning, monitoring, and documentation tools.

Issue Brief: Engaging Men and Boys to Reduce and Prevent Gender-Based Violence

The paper begins with a look at the historical efforts in Canada and the development of work with men and boys to end gender-based violence around the world. The paper examines root causes of gender-based violence, including socialization of men, power and patriarchy, masculinities, and gender inequality. Also included are promising strategies, best practices, and effective frameworks for engaging men and boys in the effort to reduce and prevent gender-based violence.

Policy approaches to engaging men and boys in achieving gender equality and health equity

This policy brief discusses the importance of developing and implementing policies to engage men in achieving gender equality and reducing health disparities. While it deals largely with issues related to disease and other health issues, the rationale and framework may be useful in developing internal policies and advocating for broader policy-driven social change.

Let's Stop Violence Before It Starts: Using primary prevention strategies to engage men, mobilize communities, and change the world (Workshop notes)

This document represents the text of a one-day workshop presented by Dr Michael Flood. Hosted by the women’s organization Soroptimist International, the workshop took place in Mt Gambier, South Australia, on July 15th 2011. The workshop took up the second day of the two-day conference United Against Domestic Violence – Engaging All Men in Prevention.

Masculinities, power and change

The relationship between men as gendered beings, power and change has been central in this research. This article presents some of the main findings that most researchers within critical studies on men will agree on, and then it discusses how to better understand men’s relationship to power and marginalization, change and gender equality in future research. It is explorative in its style, and an invitation to further debates on these important questions.

Engaging Men in Womens Issues: Inclusive Approaches to Gender and Development

This issue explores how men can be engaged to support and promote women’s rights and thus help to establish gender equitable societies. The topics covered include men’s perceptions of gender roles; men’s opinions of “women’s empowerment”; factors and incentives that influence men’s receptiveness to social, political, and economic programs for women; obstacles faced by men who wish to implement change in their communities; and proven strategies to create partnerships with men to positively transform gender relations.

Ending violence against women: From words to action

The document highlights and synthesizes issues and concerns related to addressing VAW globally. Promising practices from different countries to address VAW in areas of law, service provision, and prevention are included. The document concludes with recommendations for action in seven key strategic areas.
