Assisting Immigrant Victims of Domestic Violence, Advocate's Guide

This guide for advocates provides guidance on collaborating with immigrant and community agencies to effectively respond to the unique needs of battered immigrant women. This entails collaborating with immigrant and community agencies to develop a referral list of interpreters and train the interpreters on domestic violence issues, identify and reach out to attorneys who have knowledge of immigration issues, and establish relationships with law enforcement officers and prosecutors. This document also provides guidance on working with immigrant women to determine her safety, to provide access to interpreter, to determine her medical needs, to explain services available to her, and to refer her to an attorney.
