This document is a trainer's module on skills development, and it is part of the JUSTICE, AUTONOMY, RESTORATION AND SAFETY: A Training for Domestic Violence Advocates by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV). The ‘JARS Curriculum’ provides new advocates with the basic levels of knowledge and skills needed in order to assume their respective roles in working with survivors. The complete Curriculum includes a comprehensive Trainer's Manual and a Participant's Manual, both of which are divided into self-contained modules. Each module of the Trainer's Manual includes goals and learning objectives for each section, instructions and notes to the trainer about special set-ups or precautions, the complete text for all activities, key discussion points, outlines of lectures, sample role plays and scenarios, and handouts.
This particular module, 'Module 7: Skills Development,' will help participants 1) learn key principles related to the nature of helping relationships, active listening and communication; 2) gain clarity about their roles in providing services and support to victims; 3) become familiar with models for problem solving, crisis intervention and safety planning; and 4) practice new skills. Sections included in this module are Understanding Crisis, The Helping Relationship, Effective Communication, Problem Solving, Crisis Intervention, Safety Planning, and Goal Planning.
