Let’s Go #Back2School

Fall brings new energy and excitement for learning as students and educators prepare for an academic year brimming with the potential for growth. This eNewsletter highlights new opportunities for advocates and other social change agents to expand knowledge, exercise critical thinking, continue to develop practical skills, and build a true community of practice.

Join us on campus.

The PCAR/NSVRC Campus is a joint effort between the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR) and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC). It offers a variety of eLearning courses to educate and support you in your efforts to prevent and respond to sexual violence. Registration is required, but all courses are free of charge. Check out the newest course, Sexual Violence in Disasters: Understanding the Scope of the Problem. Based on a case study from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, this course provides an overview of the issue and guides participants through strategies for pre-planning and response.

Study prevention.

PreventConnect recently announced their newest project: This website offers a catalog of interactive courses – divided into introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels, web conference recordings, and other online offerings helps to promote learning efforts for the prevention of sexual and intimate partner violence. Through this project, PreventConnect seeks to grow a national community of learning!

Think critically.

The Building Comprehensive Solutions (BCS) website is the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence’s new resource to support critical thinking, learning and victim-defined advocacy. Tools include thinking and learning exercises to facilitate key conversations about implementing the BCS approach in program work.

Understanding National Rape Statistics (July 2012) is a 30 minute VAWnet online learning tool adapted by the NSVRC from the Applied Research Paper of the same title. Participants will understand how and why rape statistics are generated for national studies; critically evaluate the information provided by national studies on sexual violence; and apply statistics in their work.

The Use of Technology to Stalk Online Training Course by the Stalking Resource Center and National Center for Victims of Crime (2012) is a self-paced, interactive online training designed to increase the ability of criminal justice professionals and victim service providers to recognize how stalkers use technology. Participants identify steps to investigate stalking crimes and support victims of stalking.

September 2012How can I advocate within the legal system to work with victims who are nonverbal?

Many people with disabilities still experience treatment or reactions that limit attitudinal access to the court system. Societal attitudes and perceptions about people with disabilities often limit a person more than his or her disability.

August 2012How do I hold an anti-sexism study circle?

Sexism plays a huge role in creating a rape culture – one that condones violence against women. Sexist perceptions can also make it very difficult for a person to seek help. Some research has shown that learning about and discussing gender can reduce sexist attitudes (Jones & Jacklin, 1988).

Domestic Violence and Voter Registration: Safety Considerations by the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (August 2012)
With the upcoming 2012 national, state, and local elections, questions arise about safety considerations for domestic violence survivors when registering to vote. This brief document offers guidance from the NRCDV Technical Assistance Team.

With National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October 2012) just around the corner, the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence has launched a newly redesigned Domestic Violence Awareness Project website to assist advocates in community-based programs, state coalitions and other national organizations in planning and implementing their public education and awareness events. The website provides a variety of teaching tools, sample forms and templates, media related publications, webinars and audio recordings, and artwork files.
