National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV) Content Topic Results

This webinar, presented by Eleanor Lyon, reviews the methodology, findings, and implications of the second Meeting Survivors' Needs national study conducted in 2010 with a focus on non-residential domestic violence services and supports. This unique study includes rich survey data collected from nearly 1,500 survivors who received services and supports from 90 domestic violence programs, as well as from participants in 10 focus groups. Dr. Lyon describes what survivors shared and how results of this study can inform practice and policy in your community.

With the holiday season approaching, questions arise about the connection between domestic violence and distinctive holidays. This Guide showcases the nine demonstration projects funded by the FVPSA Program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through Stamp Out Family Violence Act of 2001, focusing on their goals, collaborative partnerships, experiences, challenges, and successes. These Demonstration of Enhanced Services to Children and Youth Exposed to Domestic Violence sites expanded the fieldÕs understanding of the varied ways in which children, youth and families experiencing domestic violence can be identified and provided essential services and supports.

In this podcast, Sheetal Rana of the Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse interviews Cynthia Sanders, author on the VAWnet Applied Research paper: Asset Building Programs for Domestic Violence Survivors. Dr. Sanders discusses the importance of asset building to domestic violence survivors, key themes from the research, and implications for new directions in policy, programs, and practice.

Given that research is such an invaluable tool, it is important that advocates think critically about the research findings they are using to support their work. NRCDV's November 2011 TA Question of the Month offers suggestions to help advocates ensure that they are using credible research.

This report highlights data that documents how well local domestic violence programs are addressing the needs of those reaching out to them for assistance. This substantial data collection effort involved 90 urban, rural and suburban community-based domestic violence programs and nearly 1,500 domestic violence survivors surveyed in 2010 about their experiences seeking and receiving non-residential domestic violence services.

The lack of literature on asset building and domestic violence issues is highlighted, implying a need for further research.

The author reviews available research on perceptions held by the general public about sexual violence and how they have changed over time. She also makes recommendations for future practice, which include discussing the root causes of sexual violence and addressing subtle victim blaming.
