This document represents the text of a one-day workshop presented by Dr Michael Flood. Hosted by the women’s organization Soroptimist International, the workshop took place in Mt Gambier, South Australia, on July 15th 2011. The workshop took up the second day of the two-day conference United Against Domestic Violence – Engaging All Men in Prevention.

This report outlines goals for men’s action, identifies how speaking up and activism make a difference, explores what men can do, notes the strategies with which to nourish personal strength, support and inspiration, and acknowledges the mistakes that are easy to make.

This report describes how many men use violence against women, what men think about violence against women, and what role men can and do play in reducing and preventing this violence. The report is guided by the fundamental belief that men can play a positive role in preventing men’s violence against women.

This report is intended to advance violence prevention efforts in schools in Victoria and around Australia. It is the outcome of the Violence Prevention, Intervention and Respectful Relationships Education in Victorian Secondary Schools Project, undertaken by the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth) on behalf of the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD).
