NYSCADV is pleased to host a webinar to explore the evolution of New York’s domestic violence laws and their impact on victims.
Presenters include:
- Dorchen Leidholdt, Legal Director at Sanctuary for Families;
- Gwen Wright, former Executive Director of the Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, and
- Allyson Chavez, Business Litigation Associate at Faegre Drinker.
This esteemed panel will discuss the history of arrest policies that were designed to limit police discretion in domestic violence cases and reduce police bias when addressing domestic violence. Their presentation will delve into: historical shifts in DV legislation; the effectiveness of restraining orders, New York’s pro-arrest laws and other legal interventions; how reliance on the criminal justice system to address DV has impacted DV survivors; and the challenges and opportunities for future reforms. Webinar participants will be encouraged to participate in a discussion to share their experiences, reactions, and provide feedback on NY’s pro-arrest laws.
