WHO multi-country study on women's health and domestic violence against women: Initial results on prevalence, health outcomes and women's responses

Report findings document the prevalence of intimate partner violence and its association with women's physical, mental, sexual and reproductive health. Data is included on non-partner violence, sexual abuse during childhood and forced first sexual experience. Information is also provided on women's responses. Prevalence of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women in Regions of Brazil

'This cross-sectional study was part of the ÔWHO Multi-country Study on Women's Health and Domestic Violence against women', which was carried out in ten countries between 2000 and 2003. All the countries used a standardized structured questionnaire, devised for this study. In order to obtain data from contrasting settings within each country, the biggest city and a rural region were investigated whenever feasible.

The delegada emphasizes the importance of understanding violence against women not as a law enforcement problem, but as a broader social issue that demands an integrated and multidisciplinary response. Delegacia de Defesa das Mulheres: Perman'ncias e Desafios

This article provides a brief overview of the context surrounding the creation in Brazil of the Delegacias de Defesa da Mulher (DDMs), or all female-staffed police stations. Analyzing the trajectory of the DDMs from their inception in the mid-80s to more recent years, the article highlights the main successes and challenges associated with this public policy. Critical-thinking questions are raised, including whether the creation of an all-female physical environment, in and by itself, can dissolve society's sexist culture.
