United States v. Morrison (99-5)

On May 15, 2000, the U.S. Supreme Court rendered its decision on "United States v. Morrison (99-5)" and with a 5-4 vote struck down Civil Rights Remedy (42 U.S.C. ¤13981) of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA; Pub. L. No. 103-322, ¤ 108 Stat. 1902 (1994)). This Civil Rights Remedy law had provided survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault the right to sue their assailants in civil federal court. The Civil Rights Remedy, and other parts of VAWA 1994, was passed to respond to U.S. Congressional findings confirming the pervasiveness of violence against women in the U.S.

Working with the Media: A Toolkit for Service Providers

The Michigan Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence has been working with journalists, state administrators, victim advocates, and educators to address sexual assault coverage by the media, specifically newspapers. The workgroup created a resource called "Reporting Sexual Assault: A Guide for Journalists." This document was developed to encourage more accurate and compassionate reporting on sexual assault by newspaper journalists and editors in Michigan.

This Service Provider tool kit is a companion to the "Guide for Journalists." It includes some basic information about the media, and provides a foundation for reshaping the public discussion on sexual assault. MCADSV hopes that this resource will encourage relationships between local media and sexual assault programs. This resource will prepare advocates to be responsive while proposing strategies for approaching local media outlets.
