Evaluation Plan Workbook

The Innovation Network offers a new way of conducting program evaluation that focuses less on the traditional approach of "proving whether a program worked" in favor of "improving it to be more successful." This approach to evaluation is executed internally, rather than by using outside evaluators. "By looking systematically at what goes into a program, what the program is doing and producing, and what the program is achieving, this evaluation approach enables program stakeholders both to be accountable for results and to learn how to improve the program."

The goal was of this evaluation was to "test our theory that battering is a logical outgrowth of social norms that promote contempt for women; that the true function of a BIP is to influence those norms in a way that promotes greater safety and justice for battered women; and that its success is appropriately measured in those terms." Taking Stock: A Practical Guide to Evaluating Your Own Programs

Although its intended audience is organizations that provide out-of-school science activities, the skills and techniques discussed within are easily applicable to any non-profit, community-based organization.

Chapters include information on framing the evaluation, defining goals and objectives, using qualitative and quantitative data, data collection strategies, and interpretation. Examples of each are provided, and the appendices include sample reports using evaluation data.

Immigrant Populations as Victims: Toward a Multicultural Criminal Justice System

This "Research in Brief" summarizes findings from a survey, conducted for the National Institute of Justice, that examined the response by criminal justice systems to immigrant victims of crime and the barriers that exist that prohibit immigrants from reporting crimes to officials. The report also highlights innovative programs serving immigrant victims.

Crime and the Nation's Households, 2004

"Presents information on the percentage of households or persons in households who are victimized as measured by the National Crime Victimization Survey. Findings are presented by region; urban, suburban or rural location; and by household size. This annual report also includes overall trends since 1994 and includes vandalism and intimate partner violence."

Findings suggest that about 1 in 250 households included a member victimized by a intimate partner, such as a spouse, ex-spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend.

Realities for Immigrant Populations: How they Experience the System

"Although the number of applications for VAWA status has increased, winning a VAWA self-petition is only the first step in achieving safety and independence. To gain lawful permanent residence, applicants must overcome additional legal barriers. The complicated phases of applying for immigration status coupled with the passage of VAWA 2000 have created new questions and the need for greater expertise."

Stand & Serve Primary Prevention Program Theory

The "Stand & Serve" approach utilizes developmental assets/positive youth development, community development, social norms, diffusion of innovation/peer education, social change, and marketing research to prevent violence.

The Fourth Interim Evaluation Report

"The Fourth R is a consortium of researchers and professionals dedicated to promoting healthy adolescent relationships and reducing risk behaviours. We develop and evaluate programs, resources and training materials for educators and other front-line professionals who work with youth. In particular, we work with schools to promote the neglected R (for relationships) and help build this Fourth R in school climates. Fourth R initiatives use best practice approaches to target multiple forms of violence, including bullying, dating violence, peer violence, and group violence.
