Domestic Violence Counts 2016: A 24-hour census of domestic violence shelters and services

For the eleventh consecutive year, on September 14, 2016, NNEDV conducted a one-day unduplicated count of adults and children seeking domestic violence services in the United States. This annual census documents the number of individuals who sought services in a single 24-hour period, as well as the types of services requested, the number of service requests that went unmet due to a lack of resources, and the issues and barriers that domestic violence programs face as they strive to provide services to victims of domestic violence.

Pennsylvania Crime Code: Strangulation

Research into domestic violence fatalities shows that an abuser’s attempt to strangle the victim can be a dramatic predictor of future lethality in intimate partner violence cases. Section 2718 amends Title 18 of the Pennsylvania crimes code and allows defendants to be charged with the crime of strangulation - as well as felony charges in domestic violence cases.

This study provides empirical data on cases of officer-involved domestic violence (OIDV). It identifies and describes cases in which police were arrested for criminal offenses associated with an incident of family and/or domestic violence through a content analysis of published newspaper articles. The study includes a discussion regarding OIDV police crime and policy implications.
