An Online Resource Library on Domestic & Sexual Violence
This reader-friendly handbook discusses some of the different forms of violence perpetrated against women in Brazil, including domestic violence, sexual abuse, and human trafficking. The publication provides a brief discussion of sexism, highlighting the many ways in which this oppressive system manifests in the Brazilian society. It also highlights the role of the women's movement in helping bring about important social changes.
This report demonstrates that state felony defendants charged with domestic violence were prosecuted, convicted and incarcerated at rates either equal to or higher than felony defendants charged with non-domestic violence. Data are also presented regarding court issued protection orders, guilty plea versus trial convictions, and the demographic characteristics of domestic violence defendants.
Sixteen articles are featured which discusses several dimensions and manifestations of the problem from the perspective of a diverse array of activists, practitioners and researchers. Emphases are placed in discussing how violence is intricately connected to issues of inequality and social exclusion. Articles cover issues such as school violence, child labor, and domestic violence. Analyses of the media's role in helping promote or eradicate violence as well as critiques and recommendations for community action and public policies are also provided. he survey was sponsored by the Conselho Nacional dos Direitos da Mulher (CNDM) and collected both quantitative and qualitative data. The report analyzes the conditions of operation of the DEAMs and discusses structural and philosophical recommendations to improve their services and define their institutional role in the work to end violence against women.
