Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (MCADSV) Content Topic Results

This document collects lessons learned by DV and SA programs in Missouri that have faced unexpected challenges. The lessons learned can serve as guidance for advocates across the country in planning for disasters and other emergency situations.

This webinar, held on Monday, April 21, 2014, provided information for both victim advocates working in shelter settings as well as birth doulas, regarding the identification and impact of domestic violence and abuse in pregnant women. Likewise, the benefits of a partnership between these two groups was discussed as a way to further improve pregnancy and birth outcomes for pregnant survivors.

When an agency fully embraces primary prevention, the work becomes part of the organizational culture, existing in all departments, volunteers, board members, and administrators. This guidebook defines organizational capacity for primary prevention as an agency's ability to support and implement domestic and sexual violence prevention efforts.

It is important that all programs think about and discuss what information they keep and why. This resource provides a set of sample forms that shelters can use to collect information about clients, and includes rationale for data elements included and excluded.

This guide is part of a shared goal between NRCDV, state coalitions, and individual programs to find a better way to welcome women and other domestic violence victims -- many of whom had every aspect of life controlled by their partners -- into shelter where they could experience autonomy despite the constraints of a communal living environment. The concept and conflict of having rules in shelter has been repeatedly recycled and re-silenced throughout the movement to end violence against women.
