The intersection of firearms and intimate partner violence is dangerous for the 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men who experience violence in their lifetime. The risk of lethality cannot be ignored, and they complicate safety planning when suicide or threat of a mass shooting is combined with intimate partner violence. Many advocates do not receive specific training on how to talk to victims about the risk of firearms. The Advocacy for Firearm Awareness and Risk (AFAR) training seeks to increase an advocate’s knowledge of firearm safety conversations.
