Sahiyo, in partnership with StoryCenter, Asian Women's Shelter, and Asian Pacific Islander Institute on Gender-Based Violence invites you into the stories of nine women speaking out on their experiences of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) – breaking a centuries-old silence based on fear of ostracization by family and community. These nine women, who differ in race, ethnicity, age, religion, national origin, and citizenship/residency status, face different challenges: Some have only recently discovered that they underwent FGM/C and are grappling with its emotional and physical impacts, while others have long-remembered the details of their childhood experiences and are invested in preventing them from happening to others.
Join survivors and advocates addressing violence against women to learn about the issue, to hear about prevention strategies in the U.S., and to be amazed by the resilience and hope that survivor-advocates draw on in themselves and each other. Be part of a critical mass of voices, especially from within FGM/C-practicing communities, that is calling for an end to this harmful practice.
