Spotlight Alaska and the Crisis of MMIWG

Event Date
Tuesday, May 04, 2021, 03:00PM

This panel discussion with Debra O’Gara on initiatives in the state of Alaska will bring more targeted attention to the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) and different efforts to both raise awareness and to highlight information in the report just released, “We are calling you.” "We are calling you" is a baseline report created by Data for Indigenous Justice authors Dr. Charlene Aqpik Apok, Malia Villegas, Abigail Echo-Hawk, and Jody Juneby Potts. This discussion also highlights Amber Webb’s beautiful Kuspuk project that has honored and given breath to those women and girls who have gone missing or have been murdered. This spotlight calls for the importance of federal and state recognition of tribal authority and allocation of resources to develop village-based responses to prevent MMIWG.
