What Advocates Need to Know About Strangulation and Suffocation Assaults

Event Date
Wednesday, January 29, 2020, 01:00PM

Alliance for HOPE International will join NCADV to discuss strangulation and suffocation assaults. Today, we know that if a victim is strangled even one time, she is 750% more likely to be killed by her abuser. How professionals’ approach, interview and support a traumatized victim is the key to breaking the cycle of abuse and improving our investigation, prosecution and advocacy. The use of an advocate is critical to a victim’s emotional state and ability to heal from the violence. This session will address how all professionals can help victims understand the trauma they have experienced, the seriousness and lethality of non-fatal strangulation, how to make good use risk assessment tools, better use of the power & control wheel, understand why victims need to seek medical attention, advocate for screening for traumatic brain injuries in order to promote their health and safety. This session will also share practical tips when working with reluctant victims, new research and new tools.
