Broken bodies, shattered minds: Torture and ill-treatment of women

The report is grounded in stories from around the world of individual woman's and groups of women's experiences of torture and abuse including: so called "honor crimes" of violence for ostensibly bringing shame on the family; domestic violence; sexual abuse in the workplace; experiences when purchased for forced labor, sexual exploitation, forced marriage; accusations of zina (fornication), and a range of torture and systematic indifference by state/government actors in prisons, police stations, during war and in daily life.

Violence against women: A statistical overview, challenges and gaps in data collection and methodology and approaches for overcoming them

This report provides information regarding the General Assembly of the United Nations' adoption of a resolution entitled "In-depth study on all forms of violence against women." The resolution requests the Secretary-General to conduct an in-depth study on all forms and manifestations of violence against women. This report offers background information on data collection, a summary of the discussion and objectives of the expert group meeting, and recommendations for collecting data on violence against women, improving population-based surveys and enhancing service-based data.

Sexual Violence Surveillance: Uniform Definitions and Recommended Data Elements, Version 1.0

"Sexual violence is a significant public health problem in the United States. However, measuring the problem can be difficult due to the lack of consistency in the use of terminology and data elements for sexual violence. Without consistency, we cannot monitor and track trends for sexual violence to determine the scope of the problem.... Better quality and timely incidence and prevalence estimates can be useful for a wide audience, including policymakers, researchers, public health practitioners, victim advocates, service providers, and media professionals."

Intimate Partner Violence Surveillance: Uniform Definitions and Recommended Data Elements, Version 1.0

"If the recommended data elements can be uniformly recorded and the data made available to numerous users, then btter estimates of the incidence and prevalence of IPV can be obtained and problems such as data incompatibility and high costs of collecting, linking, and using the data can be substantially reduced."

The Crushing Burden of Rape: Sexual Violence in Darfur

This report offers a glimpse into the ongoing violence against women in Darfur and includes statistics and short stories from survivors. It concludes by giving recommendations for stopping the rapes in Darfur and in the conflicts throughout the world.

When Men Murder Women: An Analysis of 2004 Homicide Data

In 2004, according to the most recent data available from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's unpublished Supplementary Homicide Report, firearms were the most common weapon used by males to murder females (811 of 1,663 homicides or 49 percent). Of these, 72 percent (582 of 811) were committed with handguns. In cases where the victims knew their offenders, 62 percent of female homicide victims (966 of 1,563) were wives or intimate acquaintances of their killers. Alaska ranks first in the nation in the rate of women killed by men.

Relationship Violence in Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender/Queer [LGBTQ] Communities: Moving Beyond a Gender-Based Framework

This paper provides a critical overview of some of the current research that has been done to better understand the contexts, dynamics and impact of relationship violence within LGBTQ communities and also identifies several barriers that still exist within support services when responding to this form of violence. The paper concludes by offering recommendations and considerations for the criminal justice and social service community and provides examples of innovative responses and programs that have been developed within LGBTQ communities that might serve as models.

The booklet discusses CAC's model in developing a proven response to child abuse by creating a multidisciplinary team approach that coordinates the key services involved in the investigation, prosecution, and treatment&of child abuse cases. It concludes by encouraging tribal communities in the developmental stages to consider the CAC's model as an appropriate response to child abuse.
