This publication is written for men and women who have survived sexual assault in prisons, jails, or other forms of detention. It offers general information about sexual abuse as well as information about the healing process.

Some practices in the mental health system may foster unhelpful attitudes or misunderstandings about domestic violence and sexual assault. Being gender-responsive means creating an environment through site selection, staff selection, program development, content, and material that reflects an understanding of the lives of women and girls and responds to their strengths and challenges. This assessment provides a tool to evaluate the gender responsiveness of programs.
