Promotoras are leaders dedicated to bridging the gap between their community members and health systems. This report shares innovative approaches Promotoras used to respond to and mitigate the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Latin@ community.

In the context of emergencies and disasters – and beyond – as advocates, service providers and social change agents, our work is the work of dismantling systems of oppression. This Technical Assistance Question of the Month (TAQ) explores what it means to root our disaster prevention and response efforts in equity, mutual aid, and hope. 

The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, in collaboration with partners from across the Northeast region of the United States, held our fourth virtual Prevention Town Hall on September 13 and 14, 2023.

This National Prevention Town Hall uplifted innovative prevention approaches in the Northeast region of the United States that build solidarity across movements to disrupt systems of violence that disproportionately harm Black women and gender expansive individuals. Presenters engaged participants in conversations around critical issues impacting Black women, youth, and gender expansive individuals including reproductive justice and housing as a basic human need and right.  

Workshop participants will walk away with increased knowledge of how oppression can manifest across the socio-ecological model and the importance of interrupting the early onset of oppression before it escalates to a macro level, historical contributions of Black early movement contributors and the values they leaned into that laid a foundation for the anti-violence work that we do today, and more.

As a field, we understand that power dynamics are multi-dimensional and seep into almost every aspect of our personal and professional lives. This Technical Assistance Question of the Month (TAQ), authored by staff at Futures Without Violence, offers examples of ways gender-based violence organizations have put their values into action.
