Rape is committed habitually by all the main armed groups, including those linked to the government. Women are being murdered throughout Iraq in unprecedented numbers.' Iraq Displacement 2007 Mid-Year Review

According to the International Office for Migration's (IOM) review, an average of 60,000 Iraqi people have been displaced per month in 2007. The report identifies sectarian violence and "lawlessness" as the major causes for the increase in internal displacement. The IOM review pays special attention to some of the challenges that women face in this environment, including lack of access to healthcare services, increased religious conservatism in camp settings, intimidation and greater vulnerability to abduction and sexual violence, and other problems.

WHO multi-country study on women's health and domestic violence against women: Initial results on prevalence, health outcomes and women's responses

Report findings document the prevalence of intimate partner violence and its association with women's physical, mental, sexual and reproductive health. Prevalence of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women in Regions of Brazil

'This cross-sectional study was part of the ÔWHO Multi-country Study on Women's Health and Domestic Violence against women', which was carried out in ten countries between 2000 and 2003. All the countries used a standardized structured questionnaire, devised for this study. In order to obtain data from contrasting settings within each country, the biggest city and a rural region were investigated whenever feasible.

This article provides a brief overview of the context surrounding the creation in Brazil of the Delegacias de Defesa da Mulher (DDMs), or all female-staffed police stations. Analyzing the trajectory of the DDMs from their inception in the mid-80s to more recent years, the article highlights the main successes and challenges associated with this public policy. Critical-thinking questions are raised, including whether the creation of an all-female physical environment, in and by itself, can dissolve society's sexist culture.
